About us
Do you love to talk about books, and you want to practice your English? Perhaps your German isn't so good, but you are itching to share a great book you read with others. Come join the new Bookclub in English in Chur, Switzerland!
We meet on the second Monday of each month in a positive and welcoming space in the Chur library. After a brief round of introductions, we review and discuss the selected book of the month, in English! What did you think of the writing style? Did the author deliver a hidden message? Were you surprised to identify strongly with one of the characters? Let's talk about it. The discussion will be gently moderated to keep participants engaged and focused, to ensure a break, and to keep the meeting between 90 and 120 minutes, depending on the density of the book under discussion.
As the discussion winds down, time is allotted for participants to propose and select next month's book. Perhaps the preceding discussion inspired you to recommend a relevant follow-up book. Or you would like to mix it up and switch to different genre, or perhaps to a lighter book of short stories, or poetry, or manga. Once the participants select the next book, they may purchase it at a 10% discount at Schuler Bücher.

08. June 2026: «Flowers for Algernon» by Daniel Keyes
Stadtbibliothek Chur, Grabenstrasse 28, Chur, GR, CHHello book lovers!
I have been meaning to read this month's book for quite a while, and I'm very excited to announce it was one of the top-ranked books in our vote: Please read the 1966 classic sci-fi novel, «Flowers for Algernon» by Daniel Keyes, and come to our Monday 08. June 2026 meeting prepared to discuss it.
Be aware that there is a novel of approximately 250-300 pages, and a much shorter novelette, which is a short story of around 26 pages. We will be reading the full novel. You are welcome to use any edition / language you would like; I will be using this one.
As always I will try to bring something fun to eat / drink! You are welcome to bring something to eat for yourself, or even to share if you would like; there are plates and glasses we can use. The Bibliothek requests no smelly food.
Please RSVP here on Meetup if you plan to show up, so I have a head count. If you can't make it, please remove your RSVP.
We will review and discuss the selected book of the month, in English! This will be a group discussion, which I will gently moderate to keep participants engaged and focused.
As the discussion winds down, time is allotted for participants to recommend future books, and to provide feedback to help shape the direction of subsequent meetings.
If you would like to receive a discount ordering this book, give me your first and last name if you haven't done so already, and I will gladly add you to the list at the Schuler Bücher bookstore at Bahnhofstrasse 22 in Chur; remind them that you are in the English Book Club (or for online orders, type this in the notes field), and you will get a 10% discount when you pay at the register.

13. July 2026: «The Death of Ivan Ilyich» by Leo Tolstoy
Stadtbibliothek Chur, Grabenstrasse 28, Chur, GR, CHHello book lovers!
This 1886 masterpiece of short fiction got me hooked on Tolstoy - you have been warned! Please read «The Death of Ivan Ilyich» by Leo Tolstoy, and come to our Monday 13. July 2026 meeting prepared to discuss it.
With Tolstoy, the translation is extremely important, and for the English edition I strongly recommend the Pevear & Volokhonsky edition. You are welcome to use any edition / language you would like; I will be using this one, which has some of Tolstoy's other fantastic short stories as a bonus.

10. August 2026: «The Little Prince» and «The Giving Tree»
Stadtbibliothek Chur, Grabenstrasse 28, Chur, GR, CHHello book lovers!
This month should prove to be an interesting experiment in comparative literature. We will compare two separate short books: «The Little Prince» by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, and «The Giving Tree» by Shel Silverstein. Both of these books are deceptively simple! But both deeply address love, sacrifice, innocence and adulthood. Is being needed the same as being loved? Does growing up lead inevitably to corruption?
Please read both The Little Prince and The Giving Tree, and come to our Monday 10. August 2026 meeting prepared to discuss them.
You are welcome to use any edition / language you would like. For Silverstein, his illustrations give so much depth to the text, and my parents read to me as a little boy from this exact edition, so I will splurge on the classic hard-cover edition. I will opt for this German & English dual-language edition of The Little Prince.
As always I will try to bring something fun to eat / drink! You are welcome to bring something to eat for yourself, or even to share if you would like; there are plates and glasses we can use. The Bibliothek requests no smelly food.
