Susan Wolf (1952) American moral philosopher, author of the "Moral Saints" paper where she explores the appeal of morality as a philosophical problem. In theory we should be attracted to act morally and to moral figures but in fact, precisely the opposite seems to often happen, when very "unethical" figures are massively appealing, by massively displaying their lack of moral compass. What s going on ? How this cognitive dissonance between our deep ethical values and the realm of our tastes and identification roles happens ? The deep question of WHY to act morally, therefore, immanent to morality itself, seems to fly over her work being probably the most relevant and unattended of the ethical questions in the philosophical tradition. What is the use of a great moral model if people doesn t engage. And why don t they... ?
A question particularly relevant in our times.
