Let´s be greek and dive today on…
KARL POPPER (1902 - 1994), the most recognized of the philosopher s of Science of the XXth Century started his reasonings close to the Neopositivist positions of the Vienna Circle, to become his own man with a very simple yet powerful idea: what makes a statement scientific is not the (scientific) method used or the previously accepted scientific theories it relies on but the logical possibility of proving it wrong, a vision known as Falsationism. The epistemological revolution Popper proposes is far reaching much beyond science: No other source of authority for truthful knowledge, no more bibles, relativity theories or Cartesian deductive systems… all of that has passed… if what you say can be proven wrong… but it doesn ´t… then we are as close to the truth as we can be. After 25 centuries of complex reasonings over what should we require to consider a statement as true… Popper puts truth telling in the lips of a child, a non academic or a street beggar… if what they say can be proven wrong… but it doesn’t, then they are telling the truth... NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE OR HOW THEY GOT TO IT. The implications of opening the Pandora box of truth are still, luckily, shaking us. On the top of that, Karl pioneers the understanding that scientific discoveries require, above all… CREATIVITY. Yes, not the systematic logical deductions but something else… For our dear cave man ancestor, to understand that he could get the apple he wanted by shaking it with the stick in his hand, required more than logical deduction… required, mainly, creativity. The blind leap that gets us to new knowledge goes through creativity.
Let s think with Karl...
