WHAT TO EXPECT:
We gather at 6:45 pm. We start at 7:00 pm and end at 8:30 pm.

The discussion is moderated by a facilitator to ensure fairness and to meet the needs of all the attendees. Topics vary by month and by meeting depending upon the needs of those who attend. New attendees almost universally feel very glad that they attended our support groups.
While our support groups are for the LGBTQiA+ community and their loved ones and allies, we would also like to encourage significant others of transgender and gender diverse loved ones to join our support groups.

San Gabriel River from Blue Hole Hike & Georgetown Red Poppy Festival
**San Gabriel River from Blue Hole Hike & Georgetown Red Poppy Festival**
This was a fun event last year - let's do it again!
We'll hike about a 5-mile portion of the San Gabriel River Trail. We will meet at 9am on Saturday, April 25th, 2026, at the Blue Hole Park trailhead. (Reference: [https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/texas/san-gabriel-trail](https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/texas/san-gabriel-trail))
The Blue Hole Park trailhead is at the corner of Rock Street & 2nd Street in downtown Georgetown, next to the Encantada Cocina-Cantina (formerly El Monumento).
The [Red Poppy Festival](https://visit.georgetown.org/events/red_poppy_festival/index.php) is a fantastic event. After the hike, we can have lunch at Encantada or a food vendor at the festival, then enjoy booths and live music throughout the rest of the day.
Also, I have been doing a lot of travel in 2026 and that will continue for a while. I'm looking for one or two more co-organizers who want to schedule local Austin-area hikes for this group, and I'll plan only a few out-of-state hikes this year. If you're interested in being a co-organizer, come on out to this event and let's chat.
Thanks,
Mike

Meteor Shower - Lyrids - Apr. 14 to Apr. 30 - Personal Activity
You do not need to sign up for this event. It is a placeholder only.
This is a personal challenge activity. If you have questions, need help, or want to organize with other members feel free to post comments below.
The International Meteor Organization has this to say...
The Lyrids are a medium strength shower that usually produces good rates for three nights centered on the maximum. These meteors also usually lack persistent trains but can produce fireballs. These meteors are best seen from the northern hemisphere where the radiant is high in the sky at dawn. Activity from this shower can be seen from the southern hemisphere, but at a lower rate.
**Shower details** - **[Radiant](https://www.amsmeteors.org/resources/glossary/#Radiant):** 18:04 +34° - **[ZHR](https://www.amsmeteors.org/resources/glossary/#ZHR):** 18 - **Velocity:** 30 miles/sec (medium - 49km/sec) - **Parent Object:** C/1861 G1 (Thatcher)
**Next Peak** \- The Lyrids will next peak on the Apr 21\-22\, 2026 night\. On this night\, the moon will be 27% full\.
Nature Nerds of Austin has this to say...
"Where is a good place to see the meteor shower?"
Good question, the darker the better. For the Austin area going either E or W will provide darker skies. I'd suggest looking at a light pollution map to help focus on areas as well.
[https://www.lightpollutionmap.info](https://www.lightpollutionmap.info/)/ [https://darksitefinder.com](https://darksitefinder.com/)/
[https://www.cleardarksky.com/maps/lp/large_light_pollution_map.html](https://www.cleardarksky.com/maps/lp/large_light_pollution_map.html)
Because meteor showers are pieces of rock and dust on an orbit that intersects Earth's orbit at some point in time and space the best time to pick as the middle of your observing window is 2am local. This is because of the way the sun, the earth, and the meteor shower interact. From sundown to 2am the light gets progressively darker and after 2am it gets progressively lighter until you hit sunrise.
You'll want a good low sitting chair that has a lot of lean back. You basically want to lay back and just stare at the sky unfocused until you see an event. They can last from very short blips to long streaks lasting several seconds. If you're lucky you'll see an air burst where a large bolide comes apart in a shower, they are extremely rare.
The best binoculars to use for stargazing are 25x70 but smaller ones will work. Larger ones have too much magnification and there is a lot of jitter just from your natural body motion so the image is not stable. Binoculars are not a lot of use for meteor showers.
The two best places to get basic information are IMO and AMS.
IMO Shower Calendar -- https://www.imo.net/resources/calendar/
AMS Shower Calendar -- https://www.amsmeteors.org/meteor-showers/meteor-shower-calendar/
Austin Astronomical Society (AAS) - They have many activities through the year. Consider becoming a member. -- https://austinastro.org/
You should also use Stellarium to help map out the date/time/and sky position of the expected source of the shower for a given date. BE ADVISED meteor showers are EXTREMELY UNPREDICTABLE. So don't expect to go out there and see something in the first 15 minutes. You could be out there all night and not see anything. Other nights you may get lucky and see a shower that has a high rate.
Stellarium has the ability to turn the screen red so you can keep it live if you have a laptop at your observing site.

Brushy Creek Regional Trail
Let's hike Brushy Creek Park Trail and walk for 1.75 hours for a total of 4.5 miles. This trail is paved so you don't need any hiking boots, but be sure to bring two or more liters of water and a flashlight. Well behaved dogs are welcome on the trail.
Here is some more info on the trail located below:
https://www.wilcotx.gov/1288/Brushy-Creek-Regional-Trail
https://www.wilcotx.gov/1293/Twin-Lakes-Park
If you need to contact me, my phone number is 281-876-7746.
We will meet at the pavilion in the parking lot and I will attach a picture.
NOTE: In the event of bad weather, I will issue a cancellation notice at least one hour prior to the event's start time.
Please note meetup has had a massive increase in price and has nearly doubled the fee to organize clubs. If you like the club and want to donate you can pay Kevin by Venmo [here](https://venmo.com/u/Kevin-Coe-9).
Finally, we recommend that you review information on the trail and that you come prepared for the hike (e.g., bring at least two liters of water, wear appropriate footwear, and a brimmed hat.) All attendees are solely responsible for their own health and safety.
By RSVPing for this event, you are agreeing that you are taking sole responsibility for your own health and safety and, if any, your guests' health and safety. If you or your guests are not willing or are unable to take responsibility for your own health and safety, do not RSVP for this event.
Please note this event is also posted on **[I love Austin, but I need some f*****g friends!](https://www.meetup.com/i-love-austin-but-i-need-some-f-g-friends/)**
