King of Diamonds | Journey Across DRC Congo Kinshasa + ROC Congo Brazzaville
King of Diamonds | Journey Across DRC Congo Kinshasa + ROC Congo Brazzaville
Along the banks of the River Congo on the western side of Central Africa are two capital cities, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Kinshasa, and the Republic of Congo’s Brazzaville, both home to dapper Sapeurs, gateways to vibrant tribes of mystical dancers, gorillas, geologic wonders in heart of darkness rainforest jungles, and kingly incarnations among ancient tribal kingdoms. If you haven’t heard the term before, **Sapeurs are followers of a fashion culture** in Brazzaville and Kinshasa, members of the Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People, made up of day labourers, taxi drivers, or even gardeners, but dressed to impress in dapper designer suits and treated like rock-stars in their communities for the joy and colour. We’ll find these Ladies and Gentlemen of the Congo in both capital cities and they’re looking forward to meeting you! Beyond Brazzaville and into the heart of the Republic of Congo we’ll find the **Téké Kingdom and it’s own capital village Mbé** where we’ll meet the modern incarnation of their King Makoko. The village has preserved the vestiges of this once heroic kingdom which once spread across 85,000 square kilometres extended into Congo and the former Zaire. Expect to hear stories from village elders, chieftains painting their faces in bright yellows and reds, and tribal ceremonies to keep you up at night. Our trip would not be completed without meeting **eye to eye with lowland gorillas,** for which one of best spot is on our way in Lesio Louna. Further on into the rainforests is the **Nkila Ntari Caves, a descent of more than a kilometers deep underground** will take us past cave paintings. **Let’s go!!** **Day 1 // Kinshasa Arrival** After arrival and immigration formalities, we’ll have a first look around Kinshasa and take in the high fashion of the Sapeurs before dinner and overnight at hotel. **Day 2 // Kingdom of Kuba** Congo coffee and fufu breakfast before we hit the bumpy road to Kuba Kingdom. The Kuba village we will head to, is one of the remnants of what was once powerful 17th century empire. They are renowned for rich artistic traditions, particularly intricate geometric raffia textiles, and had a complex, centralized political system with a royal army and administration. **Day 3 // Voodoo ceremony** We start the day with traditional voodoo ceremony and continue taking in the best of Kinshasa, including National Museum and artisan galleries. **DAY 4 // Crossing to Brazzaville** In the morning we head to port for boat crossing to Brazzaville! Take in the Sapeurs performance on the other side and wander around town before we check-in to hotel. Enjoy a dinner and toast to our border crossing into the Republic! **Day 5 //** **Lowland Gorillas** **and Teke Kingdom** Departure to Lesio Louna Reserve for encounters with the **Lowland Gorillas.** Then we’re off to Mbé village to meet King Makoko in the capital of the old kingdom of the Tékés! Village elders will tell tales of the old kingdom, chiefs will paint their faces in red and yellow, and we’ll have a chance to talk to the King himself. After our encounters with kings, head to our lodge in Ngabé for dinner and rest. **Day 6 // Queen Ngalifuru and Kebe-Kebe in Ngabe** This morning we meet Queen Ngalifuru and deliver a few gifts as tribute. Be mindful, she has a few magical powers! We have much to explore and people to meet in Ngabé before the mystical dance of the Kébé-Kébé in the evening, a performance not to miss! We’ll spend the night in Ngabé lodge. **Day 7 // Nkila Ntari Caves and Punu Tribe** Very early breakfast before drive to the Nkila Ntari Caves where we’ll have a speleologist-led look around the rock arts and formations of this kilometre-long tunnel. Lemur Trails | Journey Across West Coast of Madagascar
Picture a setting sun tinging the **sky with hues of red, purple, and orange, the mighty baobab striking a squat pose against the sky,** its plump trunk leading up to a few delicate flinger-like branches, making for one mystical sight. They can be **as short as 5 meters to as tall as 12 meters with the bottle-trunk up to 5 meters in diameter**. Trans Balkan | Journey Across Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Slovenia
Trans Balkan | Journey Across Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Slovenia
**Sitting at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe, the Balkans are a region that has been shaped by movement, exchange and conflict**. From the Ottomans to the Austro-Hungarians, over centuries empires have risen and fallen here, leaving behind a layered cultural identity that is still visible today. While the 20th century brought a more turbulent chapter, particularly during the breakup of Yugoslavia, what stands out now is this resilient region’s incredible cultural and natural richness. Travel through **Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia and Croatia** reveals a constantly shifting cultural landscape, each country offering its own distinct character while sharing deep historical ties. You’ll find Ottoman-era mosques alongside 19th century Austro-Hungarian façades, socialist-era architecture next to lively café-lined streets, and a shared love of hospitality that runs throughout. Food is a highlight: hearty, flavourful and rooted in tradition, whether it’s grilled meats, slow-cooked stews, fresh breads or strong coffee lingered over in a busy square. Our journey begins in **Belgrade**, Serbia’s cool and slightly gritty capital city. Set at the meeting point of the Danube and Sava rivers, its historic Belgrade Fortress offers sweeping views and a sense of the city’s strategic importance through the centuries. From here, we’ll head into the Serbian countryside, where villages like historic **Mokra Gora** show us what rural life was like in days gone by. In tiny Bosnia, **Sarajevo** is often described as a place where East meets West. Ottoman bazaars sit nearby colorful Baroque squares, and the city’s tragic recent history adds another layer to its story. The city is also known as the **"Jerusalem of Europe"**, due to the fact that the four major faiths of Islam, Catholicism, Eastern Orthodox Christianity, and Judaism have coexisted here for centuries. Further south, **Mostar** offers one of the region’s most recognisable sights in the elegant Stari Most, a UNESCO-listed bridge that brave divers leap off in the summer months. Crossing into Croatia, the landscapes shift from forest to dazzling Adriatic coastlines. Towns like Šibenik provide a gateway to some of the country’s best national parks, including **Krka National Park** and the lake-filled **Plitvice Lakes National Park**. Wooden walkways will lead us past waterfalls and through turquoise waters, offering a refreshing break from the city. The final stretch takes us into under-the-radar Slovenia, a land of pristine lakes, towering mountains and tranquil alpine meadows. The compact and picturesque capital, **Ljubljana**, is perfect for a riverside stroll, while nearby we’ll find highlights like Kranjska Gora’s jagged peaks and **Lake Bled**, with its iconic island church and clifftop castle, a must on every traveler’s bucket list. Taking in four countries and countless epic sights, this is the Balkan adventure of a lifetime. **Let’s go!** **Day 0 / SER: Flight & Arrival in Belgrade** Meet at DXB for a direct flight to Belgrade. Upon arrival in Belgrade, immigration and transfer to the hotel to get a good night’s sleep before the adventure begins. **Day 1 / SER: Belgrade** We start things off with an exploration of Belgrade, an underrated European capital that offers incredible culture, history and gastronomy, without the crowds. This morning we’ll tour the city’s highlights, including the iconic Belgrade Fortress. Built on a ridge above the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers, and dating back to the 2nd century, the fortress has been destroyed and rebuilt countless times over 16 centuries. Today, it stands as a powerful symbol of the city’s long and often turbulent history. In the afternoon, we’ll head out of the city center for some nature and views, visiting the Avala Tower, a 205-metre-high structure atop Avala Mountain offering panoramic vistas across the region, and Košutnjak Forest, often referred to as the city’s “oxygen factory”. Overnight in Belgrade. **Day 2 / SER-BOS: Belgrade – Mokra Gora – Visegrad - Sarajevo** Today we leave the city behind and head into the mountains towards Mokra Gora, a picturesque traditional village sitting between the Tara and Zlatibor ranges, offering a glimpse of life in rural Serbia. Here we’ll take a ride on the famous Šargan Eight, a narrow-gauge railway that loops in a figure-eight through 22 tunnels, revealing expansive views of forested hills and valleys. Crossing the border into Bosnia, we’ll make a stop at Visegrad to see the Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge, one of the region’s most striking architectural landmarks. Spanning the Drina River, this 16th-century Ottoman bridge is UNESCO-listed and offers a picturesque spot for photos. We’ll continue to Sarajevo, where we spend the night. **Day 3 / BOS: Sarajevo – Mostar** We’ll start the day with a tour of Sarajevo, a city defined by its cultural and religious diversity. It’s one of the few places where a mosque, Catholic church, Orthodox church and synagogue can all be found within walking distance, reflecting centuries of coexistence. In the old bazaar of Baščaršija, Ottoman influences remain strong, from the architecture to the tradition of slow-brewed Bosnian coffee, showcasing the city’s reputation as a place where “east meets west”. Later, we’ll take the gondola up Trebević Mountain, rising 1,627 metres above the city, which once hosted events for the 1984 Winter Olympics. We’ll enjoy the views before continuing our journey south. En route to Mostar, we’ll stop in Jablanica to visit the Neretva River battle museum, a memorial to the pivotal WWII battle of 1943. Overnight in Mostar. **Day 4 / BOS-CRO: Mostar – Kravice – Šibenik** Today we discover Mostar, the historic capital of Herzegovina, developed as an Ottoman frontier town in the 15th century. Its beautifully restored old town centres around the iconic Stari Most, a 16th-century bridge that was destroyed during the Bosnian War and later rebuilt, now standing as a symbol of reconciliation. We’ll wander the UNESCO-listed Old Town, explore the narrow streets of the bazaar, and soak up the blend of Islamic and European influences. We’ll continue on to Blagaj Tekke, a 16th-century Dervish monastery set at the base of a cliff beside a spring, combining Ottoman and Mediterranean architectural styles. Our next stop is the lush Kravice Waterfalls, a wide cascade on the Trebižat River, close to the border. Crossing into Croatia, we’ll continue to the Šibenik area, where we spend the night. **Day 5 / CRO: Šibenik – Plitvice** Today we get a dose of stunning nature as we explore Krka National Park, a majestic, protected landscape of cascading waterfalls, emerald pools and rich biodiversity shaped by the Krka River. Wooden walkways and trails make it easy to experience the scenery up close, including the impressive Skradinski Buk falls. Afterwards, we’ll stop in the historic riverside town of Skradin, a settlement with over two millennia of history. We’ll enjoy a relaxed lunch before continuing inland to the Plitvice region. Overnight in the Plitvice area. **Day 6 / CRO-SLO: Plitvice – Ljubljana** Today we visit Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia’s oldest and largest national park. Its 16 interconnected lakes, linked by waterfalls and natural limestone barriers, are famous for their constantly shifting colours, from deep azure to vivid green, caused by mineral-rich waters. Wooden boardwalks wind through the landscape, offering an immersive way to explore this UNESCO-listed site. Later, we’ll visit Rastoke, a picturesque village where traditional houses and historic watermills sit among a network of small waterfalls at the meeting point of two rivers. We’ll hit the road again and cross the border into Slovenia, continuing to Ljubljana, where we spend the night. **Day 7 / SLO: Ljubljana – Kranjska Gora – Bled** This morning we’ll set off into the Julian Alps towards Kranjska Gora, a charming alpine town near the borders of Austria and Italy. Known as a gateway to Triglav National Park, Slovenia’s only national park, it offers a pristine landscape of mountains, forests and glacial valleys, perfect for hiking and scenic drives. Next we’ll explore the most iconic of Slovenia’s sights: the fairytale-like Lake Bled. This glacial lake, known for its striking blue-green waters, is centred around a small island topped by a 17th-century church and overlooked by a dramatic cliffside castle dating back over 1,000 years. This incredible destination offers stunning views from every angle, and once we’ve had our fill (and taken hundreds of photos), we’ll head back to the city. Overnight in Ljubljana. **Day 8 / SLO-CRO: Ljubljana – Zagreb** This morning we’ll hit the road first thing, crossing the border back into Croatia. We’ll make our way to Zagreb, the country’s capital and main transport hub, where Central Europe, the Mediterranean and Southeast Europe meet. Setting out on a tour, we’ll take in the city’s chic café culture and the beautiful architecture in its charming Old Town, passing by highlights such as Zagreb Cathedral, St Mark’s Church, the Lotrščak tower, offering one of the most beautiful views of the city, and the Gric Tunnel, built as a refuge during WWII and used again during the Croatian War of Independence in the early 90s. Overnight in Zagreb. **Day 9 / CRO: Departure** Free morning to explore and do some last-minute souvenir shopping, before we head to Zagreb Airport to catch our return flight. Japan needs no introduction, as it is perhaps one of the most emblematic places on this planet, where **authenticity is still sacred – be it ancient or modern**. Japan is a place where the future entwines with the past – from neon lights and **ancient temples, to manga, geishas and samurais**. A land of stark contrast, renowned simultaneously for its dangerous natural phenomena and cherry blossoms, unmatched in beauty by the rest of the world. **A festival for any traveler’s senses, Japan awakens the soul to maximum** expression with the elegant beauty of its temples, laying hidden away from the bustling streets of its metropolises. The idyllic backdrop for an aromatic journey spanning gardens to gastronomy. For centuries, Japan was closed to the world. Until the mid-nineteenth century it did not have much contact with civilisation beyond its borders, as the Japanese were banned from traveling abroad. Isolation meant that when the preservation of native culture and tradition met modernity, they produced an eclectically unique blend of past and present, in a way like no other. **Day 01: ARRIVAL** Welcome to Japan! Today we clear immigration at Haneda Airport and check into the hotel. Following a short briefing, you can choose to either rest or hit Tokyo’s famous nightlife scene. **DAY 2: TOKYO** After breakfast we head out to explore Tokyo by train. Following a quick look at the Imperial Palace, we’ll make our way to the Sensoji Temple. **Today we grab a lunch watching a sumo match!** Next, a walk down Odaiba, a high-tech entertainment hub... **DAY 3: TOKYO – Mt. FUJI – KISO** Today we take a coach for a scenic ride from Tokyo to Oshino Hakkai, a beautiful village known for its crystal-clear spring water pools and traditional thatched-roof houses. We will take our time to stroll around, visit the shops, and appreciate the natural beauty of the area. Further on we move to Mt. Fuji 5th Station. This is the starting point for many climbers and offers stunning panoramic views of Mt. Fuji.... **Day 04: KISO VALLEY TREK** Today we stretch the legs on legendary Kiso Valley trail to enjoiy its natural beauty and numerous historical sites of the valley sandwiched between the Central Alps and the active volcano Mt Ontake. From there we transfer to Kyoto – to witness the Japanese fusion of tradition and modern culture. **Day 05: KYOTO & GEISHAS** Starting city tour from Arashiyama Area. The iconic Togetsu Bridge can’t be missed. Also, Bamboo Forest is a must-visit. Next is Kinkakuji Temple, the golden pavilion. Its picturesque scene is come from the muddy lake under the building that emphasizes the beauty of gold. We will then meet with Maiko lady and experience traditional tea ceremony. After learning about Japanese green tea, we will move to Nishiki Market. Besides many local food stores, there are many tea stores. Try finding your favorite one if interested. Going back to the hotel and spend your time for own leisure. **DAY 6: HIROSHIMA** Today we take famous bullet train “Shinkansen” to Hiroshima. Riding faster than a plane during take-off, at almost 300kmh, we will reach in about 1.5 hrs. We will start heading to Peace Memorial Park. This park is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the atomic bombing in 1945. **DAY 7: NARA – Mt. KOYA** From Kyoto, we head to Nara, which is just a short ride away. Nara is famous for its free-roaming deer in Nara Park, where you can feed and interact with them. Don't miss the Todaiji Temple, home to the Great Buddha, one of the world's largest bronze statues. **DAY 8: Mt. KOYA - OSAKA** Early morning service at the temple in Mt. Koya. This will give us a unique opportunity to witness a traditional Buddhist ceremony and experience the peaceful atmosphere of the mountain. Twin Green | Journey Across Sao Tome and Principe via Ghana
Twin Green | Journey Across Sao Tome and Principe via Ghana
**Welcome to the unknown paradise!** From waterfalls in the middle of the jungle to banana-shaped beaches passing through a national park , these islands of the Gulf of Guinea boast of being one of the least visited places on the planet and of being that exotic destination and **Paradise that you thought you could only dream of**. It is the part of land closest to the center of the planet - coinciding with the passage of the Equator and very close to the zero meridian. Are you coming on a trip to a country so unusual that few manage to locate it on the map? São Tomé marvels with their **Portuguese colonial mix**, beaches and the laid-back atmosphere in the Gulf of Guinea. To define themselves, Santotomenses use a very graphic expression, derived from Portuguese: they are leve-leve. That is, calm, relaxed. And it is that relaxation seems to preside over this country that is both the center and the end of the world. **It is not a tourist destination at all,** despite how much it has to offer like wild postcard beaches. A very important portion of virgin forest, declared a Biosphere Reserve, with the Ôbo Natural Park as the main banner, numerous cocoa plantations or coffee (known as roças). A country with dazzling landscapes with incredible volcanic chimneys emerging in the middle of nowhere, a huge number of endemic animal and plant species, as well as others such as sea turtles, birds and whales, which are part of the objective of many nature lovers visiting the country. The small country exhibits the traces of a troubled history that began when two Portuguese navigators landed in 1470 in this then deserted site. A story that is revealed to those who wander the streets of the capital (which is called, like the island, Santo Tomé). The parallel architectures of this tiny city summarize the history of the country: some old wooden huts evoke the initial time, when the islands were populated by slaves brought from the mainland. Some colonial buildings with large wooden balconies recall the five centuries of colonization. Uniform, greyish apartment blocks hark back to the era of real socialism, from independence in 1975 to the political and economic liberalization of the early 1990s. Meanwhile, a few ultramodern buildings made of large glass point to the future. The engine of the country's wealth and today constitutes one of its great cultural and tourist attractions: **las roças**. If it weren't for the insidious humidity, the visitor could have the sensation of landing on some sugar plantation in the Brazilian northeast: the same buildings with a colonial flavor, the same atmosphere of an old decayed empire. Also its train to transport the merchandise, as some old rails recall. **The most incredible landscapes on this side of the equator**, with various reminiscences of films such as Jurassic Park, King Kong as well as others in which the jungle is the setting. To top it off with a tropical fruit market, canoes with freshly caught fish, the smiles of the happy people of the islands and a veritable swarm of children jumping into the river to play as if there were no tomorrow. São Tomé and Príncipe will fill many blank pages on your adventure notebook. **MAY 24** Departure to Accra, connecting flight to STP. **MAY 25** Lagoa Amelia hike 3hrs, Almada Negreiros, story of chocolate, Cacau Espace. **MAY 26** Colonial rocas, past and present. **MAY 27** Waterfall and channels crossing. **MAY 28** Santana Islet, overnight at beach resort. **MAY 29** Rolas Islet, departure to Accra. **MAY 30** Relax by the pool and departure home. **Activities:** jungle trekking, swimming, boating, sightseeing. **Accommodation & meals:** 4 star comfy forest lodge + seaside eco-lodge, hotel in Ghana - double sharing. Most of (fine) meals included, meals on transfers (Ghana). **Cost: AED 8370 AED** all incl. flights to Sao Tome from Accra (Ghana). Flights to Ghana from your location excluded. **Cost valid until MAY 20.** Past this date please inquire about cost and availability. **Emirates DXB - ACC** at approx. 3500 AED. **Specifically excluded:** flights to Ghana, visas if any, meals in Ghana. **Visas:** Sao Tome: entry permit + visa payable on arrival, Ghana transit visa on arrival. *It is participant sole responsibility to assure admission to country of destination.* See yah in Green xx Trekkup Crew [Whatsapp 050484823](https://wa.me/971504848238) / [info@trekkup.com](info@trekkup.com) [Find all trekkups at linktr.ee/trekkup](https://linktr.ee/trekkup)

Queen of the Desert | Journey Across Namibia
If you've ever dreamed of discovering the **true face of Africa** \- this trip is for you: surreal landscapes\, breathtaking views of mountainous dunes\, rich flora and fauna in their habitat\, unique cultures\. NAMIBIA electrifies visitors and for a reason it is called **the most photogenic place on Earth!** It is difficult to describe the color of hot sand warmed from the sun, you just have to see it. The impressive **Skeleton Coast**, called by the former Portuguese sailors "the gate to hell", located on the Atlantic with shipwrecks on it. It's no secret that the coast is also **a favorite seal place** that you can often find there. People living here regardless of whether they represent the tribe of Bushmen Damara, Herero, Bantu, Hottentots or Himba adhere to the principle that the cheapest and easiest way to improve their image is to smile. You'll also find out how much truth is said that we **Europeans have watches and Africans have time.** What awaits you here are unforgettable joint **evenings with the greatest sunsets**, campfires under a canopy of stars, camps set up in the middle of the wildest corners of the world and the company of animals known so far mainly from National Geographic programs. We will experience the rhythm of communing with wildlife and experience the diversity of nature, meet unknown cultures and tribes. Now you can get on the road with us and set off to the wilderness of some of the most remote places on African continent. **Namibia is a real DESERT QUEEN**, ruling its kingdom with the wind that carves the dunes, shapes beaches, rocky peaks and river banks. **Let's go!!** **Day 1: Windhoek** Arrival in Windhoek, Namibia’s laid-back capital where colonial architecture meets Africa. After a short briefing, transfer into the city. The rest of the day at leisure to stretch the legs, grab a drink, or simply relax. **Day 2: Palmwag** We head north into the wild, where landscapes begin to open and the real adventure kicks in. On the way, stop at a traditional Himba village to learn about one of Namibia’s most iconic cultures with red ochre, intricate hairstyles, ancient traditions. Arriving in Palmwag, the scenery turns dramatic: red hills, dry riverbeds, and desert-adapted wildlife territory. In the afternoon, head out on a scenic game drive through one of Namibia’s most untouched concessions. Keep your eyes open for desert elephants, giraffes, or even the elusive black rhino. **Day 3: Swakopmund** Today we follow the raw Atlantic edge of Namibia along the Skeleton Coast, a beautiful stretch of foggy shores, shipwreck stories, and endless horizons. Stop at Cape Cross, home to one of the largest Cape fur seal colonies in the world, their population is about 260 thousand individuals. By afternoon, arrive in Swakopmund, where desert dunes crash into the ocean. Indulge in this gorgeous locality with its beach walks, German inspired cafés, and few adrenaline options. Optional kayaking with seals or skydiving. **Day 4: Namib desert** Leave the coast behind and drive inland toward the legendary Namib — the oldest desert on Earth. On the way, stop at the Kuiseb Canyon viewpoint and cross the Tropic of Capricorn. The landscapes become vast, empty, almost cinematic. Arrive in the desert and settle into the silence. Golden light, endless horizons, and star filled skies above. **Day 5: Sossusvlei & Deadvlei** Early wake up call. We drive deep into Sossusvlei to catch sunrise over the towering dunes. Climb Dune 45 as the sand glows red and gold beneath your feet. Some dunes here rise nearly 400 meters, the highest in the world. Once we are done with picnic breakfast at the feet of the dune, we head for a walk through otherwordly Deadvlei, where the vast expanse of white salt contrasts with the surrounding red dunes and dried tree stumps. **Day 6: Sesriem Canyon - Windhoek** Before leaving the desert, explore Sesriem Canyon, carved over centuries by seasonal floods, a cool and shaded contrast to the dunes. Timor, Leste Go! | Journey Across East Timor (via Bali)
Timor, Leste Go! | Journey Across East Timor (via Bali)
**Imagine a place where the sun rises over mist-wrapped mountains, the ocean glows electric turquoise**, and the only thing crowding the beach is a curious sea turtle. Welcome to Timor-Leste, the secret half-island paradise that time and mass tourism forgot. Located 600 km north of Australia, this is **Southeast Asia’s wildest, youngest country**. The world’s newest democracy, born in 2002 after centuries of Portuguese spice traders, revolutionary spirit, and a hard-won fight for freedom. The scars of the past are still healing, but that only makes the beauty feel more raw, more real, more alive. Here, Catholicism dances with ancient animist beliefs, Portuguese fades into melodic Tetum, and every smile feels like it’s been waiting just for you. Roads wind through coffee plantations and jungle-shrouded hills, then suddenly drop to idyllic white sand beaches where dolphins play just offshore. Only 30 km across glittering straits lies **Atauro Island, a laidback jewel** with 9,000 souls, zero traffic lights, and some of the healthiest coral reefs on earth. Snorkel straight off the beach, hike volcanic ridges at sunrise, then kick back with a cold one while fishermen grill the day’s catch under the palms. And that’s just the warm-up. On this Trekkup, we’ll **chase sunrise from the summit of Mount Ramelau (the highest peak in Timor), wander forgotten coastal villages, swim in hidden lagoons**, and discover places most travelers will never hear about. No crowds. No resorts. Just pure, uncut tropical freedom and the friendliest welcome in Asia. Ready? **Leste GO!** **Day 1 :: Dili** Arrive in Dili, complete immigration formalities, and check in at the hotel followed by a welcome lunch. In the afternoon we visit the vibrant Tais Market, then head to the impressive Cristo Rei statue (third tallest in the world) and the nearby 6-metre statue of Pope John Paul II. For a taste of local culture we can stop at a traditional cockfight. We end the day with sundowners and relaxed beach time at Areia Branca before dinner. **DAY 2: HATUBUILICO – MAUBISSE** After breakfast and hotel check-out, we depart for the highlands with panoramic views over Dili, the bay, and Atauro Island on the horizon. We pause at the serene WWII Memorial, then continue to the historic town of Aileu for lunch at a scenic vanilla farm. The drive continues through rolling green hills and coffee plantations until we reach charming Maubisse. In the evening a traditional welcome ceremony awaits, complete with warm local hospitality. **DAY 3: MT. RAMELAU** Early wake-up, and depart to the trailhead of Mount Ramelau (2,963 m), Timor-Leste’s highest peak. The steady 2 hr ascent brings us to the summit in time for a spectacular sunrise. Cheer up the sunrise with few selfies, descent and reaching the base by mid morning. Return to the guesthouse for breakfast and a quick refresh, then drive back toward Dili with a refreshing stop at Dokomali Falls – a hidden gem where clear mountain water cascades into a natural pool surrounded by lush jungle, perfect for a cool swim, and a light picnic before continuing to the capital. Overnight in Dili. **DAY 4: ATAURO** Morning transfer to the port and a scenic ride to Atauro Island. After settling in, we spend the day snorkelling over vibrant coral reefs and exploring the laid-back main village. Fresh seafood lunch, relaxed beach time, and the gentle rhythm of island life take over. **DAY 5: ATAURO** Breakfast at leisure, followed by a boat trip along the untouched western coast to snorkel at Atekry, Adara, and Iliana are some of the healthiest reefs in the region. Swim with tropical fish and possibly sea turtles, enjoy lunch on a quiet beach, and soak in the serene surroundings. In the late afternoon beachside bonfire, fresh grilled seafood, local music under an endless starry sky. **DAY 6: DILI** Morning boat back to the capital. Ease into the day with authentic Timorese coffee, warm sweet breads, and sasoru grilled corn. Free time for final souvenir shopping at the markets or one last swim. She has exposed her legs in a biblical city, an act they deem forbidden, and their judgement will echo on through her adolescence. When our narrator finally admits to her mother that she is queer, her mother's response only intensifies a sense of shame: 'You exist too much,' she tells her daughter. Told in vignettes that flash between the U.S. and the Middle East--from New York to Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine--Zaina Arafat's debut novel traces her protagonist's progress from blushing teen to sought-after DJ and aspiring writer.

Trails & Ales! Blendon Woods Metro Park / Forbidden Root Restaurant & Brewery
Trails & Ales! Blendon Woods Metro Park / Forbidden Root Restaurant & Brewery
**History** The history of [Blendon Woods Metro Park](https://www.metroparks.net/parks-and-trails/blendon-woods/) began long before its 1951 opening, rooted in a landscape of rugged ridges and deep ravines that made the land unsuitable for traditional farming. In 1945, a report proposing a metropolitan park system for Franklin County specifically highlighted these cliffs of Bedford Shale as some of the "wildest land in the vicinity". Following this recommendation, the recently formed park district purchased the first 229 acres in early 1949. Because the terrain was so uneven, developers had to cut a mile-and-a-half-long roadway through dense woods just to bring in heavy equipment. This initial preservation effort ensured that the mature second-growth hardwood forests remained largely untouched by the urban expansion spreading toward Westerville. Opening day arrived on Labor Day, September 3, 1951, marking Blendon Woods as the second park in the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks system. The final push to open was a frantic race; the State Highway Department only finished the primary gravel access road four days before the gates opened. Early staff members, consisting of just four full-time employees, had to hand-dig pit toilets and learn construction skills on the fly to build the first picnic shelters. Despite the dusty conditions and limited facilities, the park was an immediate success, drawing massive crowds from across Central Ohio. By the end of the 1950s, annual visitation had already climbed to over 190,000 people. As the surrounding suburbs grew in the 1960s, the park faced severe overcrowding that threatened its natural habitats. In response, Franklin County voters passed the first Metro Parks levy in 1960, providing the funds necessary for a decade of steady expansion. During this era, the park nearly doubled in size, growing from 264 acres to over 570 acres by 1968. Planners also addressed a critical water shortage by collaborating with the U.S. Soil and Conservation Service to build a lake in 1964. This body of water originally served as a temporary reservoir before its role shifted toward conservation and wildlife support. The 1970s marked a transition toward the specialized wildlife and educational focus for which the park is known today. In 1971, the Walden Waterfowl Refuge was established around the 11-acre Thoreau Lake, creating a sanctuary that remains restricted to provide a quiet habitat for migratory birds. A formal nature center was also developed during this period, expanding on the guided Sunday walks that had been a park staple since the early 1950s. The park’s famous "Monarch Mansion" also became a prominent fixture, starting a long tradition of raising and releasing thousands of monarch butterflies each September. These initiatives cemented the park’s reputation as a premier destination for birders and nature enthusiasts. In more recent decades, Blendon Woods has continued to modernize while maintaining its wilderness character. The 10-acre Natural Play Area was added in 2017, encouraging kids to explore the ravines and woods off-trail. This was followed by the opening of a $1.5 million inclusive playground in April 2025, designed to accommodate children of all physical abilities. The nature center also underwent major renovations to include immersive, three-dimensional exhibits and a new butterfly house. Today, the park encompasses 653 acres, preserving a unique geologic and biological corridor amidst the bustling Westerville and Northeast Columbus area. **Map of the Park** Here is a map of [Blendon Woods](https://www.metroparks.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/BLN_map_Inclusive-Playground-and-Butterfly-Trail_May-2025_1980px.png). **Summary** For this event, we will hike the Lake View, Hickory Ridge, Ripple Rock, Overlook, Brookside, and Sugarbush Trails. This sounds like a lot, but it will really be only a little over five miles. Blendon Woods has a few hills here and there, but it's not one of the more strenuous metro parks. **Where We'll Meet** We'll meet just in front of the Nature Center. This is about a mile into the park from the main entrance. You have to go past the Ranger Station and the Shadblow Reservable Area to get to it, so don't stop too early at the Ranger Station and get it confused with the Nature Center. **After the Hike** Afterward, we will head over to [Forbidden Root Restaurant & Brewery](https://forbiddenroot.com/restaurants/columbus-ohio/) at Easton for [drinks](https://forbiddenroot.com/restaurants/columbus-ohio/#dinner-menu) and [food](https://forbiddenroot.com/wp-content/uploads/Cbus-Food.pdf). We should be there by 5 if you can't make the hike and just want to join us for drinks. The brewery's actual address is [4080 Worth Ave, Columbus, OH 43219](https://www.google.com/maps/place/4080+Worth+Ave,+Columbus,+OH+43219/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x88388a86d10b6619:0x4d42b470a5cf11d3?sa=X&ved=1t:242&ictx=111); however, I recommend pointing your GPS to the [Worth Garage](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Worth+Garage/@40.0542293,-82.9137962,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x88388b4df6082825:0x17582f0eccd9dda1!8m2!3d40.0542293!4d-82.9137962!16s%2Fg%2F11rzfvvv8b?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDQxNS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D) across the street.
