Design Talk Night - Human-Centered Learning Loops

Details

Join us for our talk nights in San Francisco! This month we are hosting a design talk, along with time for networking, food and drink.

SCHEDULE:

6:00pm — Doors open, food, networking

6:30pm — Kaitlyn Irvine & Nadia Surtees: Human-Centered Learning Loops

Has a client ever cut research from the project budget? Have you ever felt like you didn’t have the time (or the money) to co-create with users? Spoiler alert: you don’t need expensive software or long project timelines to get user feedback!

At IDEO, we design with users to bring clarity to the design process in a matter of hours, not days or weeks. We’ll share some of our favorite stories and best practices for creating human-centered products. Takeaways will include methods for developing equitable research plans, frameworks for iterative testing, and tools for synthesizing findings on the fly.

7:30 – 8:00pm — more hanging out and chatting with nice humans.

SPEAKERS:

Kaitlyn Irvine, Senior Interaction Designer, IDEO

Kaitlyn is an Interaction Designer at IDEO San Francisco. She is passionate about user experience, emerging technology, and building new ventures. Kaitlyn has been a critical member of multiple venture projects at IDEO, scaling her learnings around building, iterating and testing quickly.

Kaitlyn is passionate about exploring new technologies, always pushing the interaction design community at IDEO to try new tools in order to improve our digital and venture process. She is particularly interested in digging into the role of emerging technologies like AR and VR. She strives to leverage these technologies to enhance human connection.

Prior to IDEO, Kaitlyn focused on systemic design and brand strategy; ranging from building design systems at Victoria's Secret and Gillette to helping startups launch and scale products from scratch. She studied Fine Art and Design at the University of Florida.

On any given weekend, you can find her backpacking or skiing somewhere in the California mountains.

Nadia Surtees, Principal Design Researcher, IDEO

Nadia is a Principal Design Researcher at IDEO San Francisco. She holds a Bachelor of Economics and Psychology from The University of Sydney and a Masters of Design at Parsons New School in New York via The University of New South Wales specializing in Industrial and Interaction design.

At IDEO, Nadia translates stories and data into product designs using her skills in illustration as sense-making tool to unpack complex ideas. These skills enable her to help teams learn and iterate during lean design cycles.

Before moving to SF, Nadia grew up between Sydney and Palo Alto. When she's not designing you'll find her doing Acroyoga, sketching and painting or whipping up a vegan recipe at home.
