About us
Welcome to Escape London City Explorers a walking and social group aiming at doing a range of guided walks and social trips to cities outside of London from London and guided walks and hikes within London.
The idea is to do a short country hike or city urban walk exploring cities or towns fairly close to London such as Oxford, Brighton, Portsmouth or Stratford-upon-Avon.
Transport will be either by train or coach, the group is twined with two other groups London Explorers (London walks & hikes) and Chiltern Explorers (countryside hikes within the Chilterns and further afield).

Bledlow the Ridgeway & a Secret Garden – Country Hike
Marylebone Railway Station, Melcombe Place, London, GBWalk length 11.5 miles/18.5 km approx. Circular.
A really picturesque circular walk from Saunderton Station up to the small Chiltern village of Bledlow across a variety of landscapes from scenic views to wooded tracks, with a few climbs.
Some of this walk is on the Ridgeway National Trail, a path that follows tracks going back to prehistoric times and used by travelers and herdsman.
Bledlow village is on the border between Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. The parish church Holy Trinity is described as one of England's 1,000 best churches and is a Grade I listed building that dates back to the 12th century.
There is a secret garden in Bledlow village, a water garden provided by the Carington family for the benefit of the village of Bledlow which we will try to visit.
Lunch and Finish: Please bring a snack lunch and water for the hike (rustic lunch stop, no facilities). The walk should finish before 4.30pm and include an optional pub stop at the end (the pub is 5minutes from the rail station) however the end time may be slightly earlier or later than this depending on the weather and pace.
THIS HIKE IS MEDIUM IN LENGTH BUT HILLY IN PLACES AND WILL BE TAKEN AT A STEADY PACE.
Meeting:
Meet outside Saunderton Rail Station for the hike to start at 11.00am (are regular trains from London). SAUNDERTON STATION HAS NO FACILITIES.
The 9.53am train from London Marylebone gets to Saunderton for 10.52am. It is suggested you get to Marylebone from 9.30am to give you time to get tickets.
The organizer will meet you at Saunderton station, you will need to get the train from London independently.
Car: Car parking at Saunderton Rail Station is free (please check for any restrictions and leave enough time to park). This is a circular walk and finishes back at Saunderton Rail Station.
Train from Marylebone should be around £17 or less with a groupsave or network railcard discount.

Bayswater to Oil Drum Alley – Walk & Drinks
Bayswater Underground Station, W24qh, London, GBWalk length 2 miles/3.2 km approx. Linear.
A quirky stroll from Bayswater along Bayswater Road and Holland Park Avenue to Shepherd's Bush. See and hear about a myriad of historical trivia from spies to Hugh Grant and Rag & Bone.
We will visit a very classy retro pub in an old shopping centre at the end for some refreshments/food near Shepherd's Bush underground.
Meeting
Meet outside Bayswater Underground Station at 3.pm for the walk to start at 3.15pm (see photo above).
The walk finishes close to Shepherd's Bush underground.

Ghosts, Hellfire Caves & Historic West Wycombe/Halloween Sunday Hike
Marylebone Railway Station, Melcombe Place, London, GBWalk length 9miles/15km approx. Circular.
A very picturesque walk from Saunderton to West Wycombe with a Halloween theme.
The historic village of West Wycombe is maintained by the National Trust and features many interesting buildings built between the 16th and 18th centuries. The Mausoleum and Golden Ball above West Wycombe village are impressive local landmarks.
The old village of West Wycombe and Wycombe Hill supports around 8 ghosts wandering the graveyards, caves and pubs! The hike will include a ghost walk mentioning some of the ghosts.
The Hellfire Caves
West Wycombe hill has been used for a quarry for centuries for roads and houses in the area and the quarrying was extended in the middle of the 18th century to help employ local workers after serious crop failures.The caves were supposed to have been used by Sir Francis Dashwood in the 18th century for his notorious Hellfire Club that may have involved Satanic or Pagan rituals but also a lot of partying!
Lunch & Finish
Please bring a snacks and water for the walk. The hike should finish at about 4.30pm and include a pack lunch stop, however the time may be earlier or later than this depending on the weather and pace (please don't arrange any definite evening plans).For this walk we going to have an hour and a half for the lunch stop to give everyone the chance to explore the hellfire caves should they wish. You can bring a pack lunch or visit one of the local pubs in the village or the hellfire cafe, I would suggest a pack lunch as the pubs could be busy for food and allow time to visit the caves. There are some public loos close to the caves and the village. The hike will include a ghost walk.
We will go for optional drinks at the end of the walk at Saunderton, the pub is very close to the station.
The final hike back to Saunderton from West Wycombe is fairly short but it may start getting dark in the woods so please bring a torch for light and to ward off any ghosts!

The Hellfire Caves are open from 11am to 4pm; as this is Halloween the caves are decorated and we may have same ghost actors wandering around. If you want to visit the caves its £9.50 payable at the cave entrance, there is a family discount we can use as a group discount (4 persons, £30).Meet outside Saunderton Rail Station for the hike to start at 11am after the train from London arrives at 10.52am (there are no facilities at Saunderton station).
Train from London: The 9.53am train from London Marylebone gets to Saunderton for 10.52am. If coming from London I suggest meeting close to the WHSmiths (see photo below) from 9.30am to give you time to get tickets. Discounts available with a network railcard or a groupsave.
If you get a groupsave you must travel back in small groups. The organizer will not be getting the train, but will meet you at Saunderton.
