A quirky historical walk exploring the themes of both radicalism and architecture from the Angel down to Clerkenwell and following some of the steps of Lenin.

The buildings viewed have or have had very diverse uses from politics to law, prisons, schools, housing and health; with the sites of former homes and workplaces of Lenin and the Constructivism architecture of Lubetkin.

We will go for some refreshments afterwards near Farringdon.

A hike with a great variety of scenery, including fine views and the summit of a number of hills including Whiteleaf Hill, Pulpit Hill Nature Reserve, Beacon Hill, Coombe Hill and a walk around the footpath close to the Prime Minister's Chequers country home.

Chequers house is the country house of the Prime Minister. It was given as a house for the Prime Minister in 1917 and dates from the 16th century.
The walk passes through a number of woods and scenic Chiltern countryside and uses a number of important footpaths including parts of the Ridgeway, an ancient track described as one of Britain's oldest roads and the more recent Alyesbury Ring.

Princes Risborough is a small country town that lies between the Vale of Aylesbury and the Western Escarpment of the Chiltern Hills, on the route of the pre-Roman Upper Icknield Way and is dominated by a chalk hill carving, the Whiteleaf Cross.

The walk should finish about 4.30pm and include a Snack/lunch stop however the time may be earlier or later than this depending on the weather and pace.

THIS IS A SUBSTANTIAL HIKE IN LENGTH AND WITH A NUMBER OF HILL CLIMBS, PLEASE ENSURE YOU ARE HAPPY WITH THIS.

Meet outside Princes Risborough Train Station for the hike to start just after the train from London arrives at 10.25am.

At London Marylebone Rail Station: Meet from 9.15am at London Marylebone to get the 9.42am train that gets to Princes Risborough for 10.25am (you may have to queue for groupsaves). Meet close to the WHSmiths (see photo below).

The organizer is not taking the train but will meet you at Princes Risborough.

For parking the station charges but nearby roads are free on Sundays such as Manor Park Avenue.

We may go for drinks at the end of the walk.

A wonderful weekend in Sunny Worthing including 2 hikes exploring the South Downs and the Sussex coastline.

Worthing is situated just 10 miles to the west of Brighton on the south coast and its pier won Pier of The Year in 2019!

Worthing has a thriving pub and restaurant scene, including the obligatory Wetherspoons (which is open until 1:30AM on Saturday!).

Hikes:

Friday (27th September): I will be putting on a short guided walk around Worthing in the evening, ending at The Three Fishes (Wetherspoons). Meeting point and time to be advised nearer the time.

Saturday (28th September)'s hike will be a Worthing Circular over the South Downs (approximately 15 miles over undulating terrain). A gradual climb up to Cissbury Ring, the largest ancient hill fort in South-East England, then further into The South Downs, where we will (weather permitting) see some spectacular views of the Sussex coastline spanning as far east as Beachy Head on The Seven Sisters cliffs. We will have lunch on The South Down. Please bring a packed lunch with you. After lunch, we will make our way back to the coast, then walk the last 2½ miles along the coast from Lancing to Worthing. Meet in the front of Worthing station at 10:30AM. We should be back in Worthing by 5pm.

Sunday (29th September)'s hike will be a linear coastal hike between Worthing and Littlehampton (approximately 9 miles). This hike will be a flat walk along varied terrain (including a tarmac promenade, shingle beach and grass). There is also the opportunity to visit another Wetherspoons (The George Inn in Littlehampton). On Sunday afternoons, there are regular trains to London Victoria from Littlehampton (approx 3 per hour) and frequent buses or trains back to Worthing. Meet in front of Worthing Pavilion (entrance to Worthing Pier) at 11AM. We will have lunch on the beach en route, so please bring a packed lunch.

Please book accommodation in Worthing for the weekend (there are many hotels, B&Bs and campsites in and around Worthing).

Please bring a packed lunch and water for the walk. The walk should finish at about 4.30pm and include a 30 min snack lunch stop probably around Winchmore Hill or Coleshill Common, however the time may be earlier or later than this depending on the weather and pace.

Meeting & Transport

Train from London: 10.37am from London Marylebone gets to Beaconsfield for 11.03am (see photo below). See National Rail Enquiries (http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/).

I would suggest you meet from 10am to get group saves/buy tickets (see photo below). The organizer will not be taking the train from London but will meet you at Beaconsfield Train Station.

Meet outside Beaconsfield Station for the walk to start at 11.05am, just after the train from London arrives (north side of the station so take the footbridge over to the north side if arriving from London.

Car: Station Car Park at Beaconsfield charges. There may be some free street parking a short walk from the station along nearby roads. Please leave enough time to park and check restrictions. This is a linear hike so you will need to collect your car from from Beaconsfield or High Wycombe.

This is a chance to explore some of London's hidden sights on a boat trip along the Thames followed by a walk.

The walk follows parts of the Green Chain walk through Shooters Hill and Oxleas Wood and ends close to Welling. some of the sights include..

A walk past Charlton House a Jacobean House originally the residence for a nobleman associated with the Stuart royal family. It served as a wartime hospital before becoming a museum and library. It is now run by Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust.

Severndroog Castle is a folly built in the late 18th century. We can stop for lunch near the folly that also has a tearoom and the tower should be open on a Sunday.

Lunch and Finish

Bring water and a snack lunch. This walk should finish at about 4.30pm and include a snack lunch stop, and optional pub stop at the end close to Welling. Welling station is in Zone 4 with connections to London Victoria.

River Bus: Meet outside Westminster Pier from 9.30am (see photo above) to get the river bus (www.thamesclippers.com at 10.01am (RB1) getting to Woolwich Aresenal Pier for 11.08am (we need to get this boat).

A varied hike exploring a section of the South Downs Way from Amberley to Westburton Hill and then Halanker Windmill and a stunning Tree Tunnel. The hike finishes at the pretty castle town of Arundel.

Meeting

The hike Starts outside Amberley Rail Station at 10.30am after the train from London arrives. the hike finishes at Arundel.

Meeting at London: Meet from 8.30am at London Bridge Train station to get the 9.07am train arriving at Amberley for 10.28am.

At London getting group saves at 8.30am (may have to queue, please be prompt so we can get tickets and board the train.

The meeting point is London Bridge Train Station. Meet next to the main ticket office opposite the WHSmith. See photo below.

We will have a snack pack lunch stop halfway along the hike and optional drinks at the end at Arundel.

Train cost approx £25 return with a groupsave or network railcard discount. Get a return to Arundel but on the way down get off at Amberley.

If you are driving you will need to collect your car from either Arundel or Amberley as the hike is semi-circular.

A very varied hike exploring a number of features... Jordans is famous as a centre for the Quaker movement during the 17th century. Two sights of interest are the Jordans Friends Meeting House and the Mayflower Barn (wood claimed to be from the Mayflower), we will try to see the outsides of both.

We will through Hodgemoor woods a section of ancient woodland that was the site of a Polish Refugee camp from 1946-1962 one of a number of camps in the area that housed Polish servicemen and their families after WW2, some remains exist.

On the last section we can stop at the Royal Standard of England for a drink which is possibly one of the oldest pubs inthe UK. The pub is a short walk back to Beaconsfield station for trains back to London or final drink at the Beech House Beaconsfield.

The terrain on the hike is gently undulating and the hike should finish around 4.30pm but the time maybe slightly earlier or later depending on on pace and conditions.

Meeting

Meet outside Beaconsfield Train station, north side of station for the hike to start at 10.45am after the train from London arrives.
PLEASE ALL MEET AT THE NORTH SIDE OF THE STATION (YOU MAY HAVE TO USE THE FOOTBRIDGE).

From London

The 10.12am train from London Marylebone gets to Beaconsfield for 10.44am.

If getting the train from London you are suggested to get to Maryebone for 9.45am onwards to give you time to get tickets/groupsaves. Meet outside the WHSmiths (see photo below).

Train £16 return approx with a network railcard or groupsave ticket.
The organizer will not be getting the train but will meet you at Beaconsfield.

By Car, Beaconsfield station charges but some side roads are free on a Sunday (check for parking restrictions and leave enough time to park).

A very scenic hike from the small town of Hitchin past historic villages and nature reserves to the Pegsdon Hills and Hoo Bit Nature Reserve on the border between Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. The town of Hitchin has a wealth of ancient buildings and church dating back to the 13th century.

Hitchin marks the northeast edge of the Chiltern Hills and complements one of our recent walks at Goring-on-Thames that marks the southwest edge some 50 miles away. Both edges are often referred to as the Goring and Hitchin gaps.

The Chiltern Hills form a chalk escarpment north and west from London across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, and Bedfordshire and are designated officially as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Lunch and Finish

Please bring a packed snack lunch and water for the hike, the walk should finish before 5.00pm, however the time may be earlier or later than this depending on the weather and pace (this is a complete day event and you are advised not to have definite events planned in the evening).

We will probably have an early lunch close to the small village of Pirton.

Meet Outside Hitchin Station for the hike to start at 10.10am (after the train from London). Car parking at the station or free roadside parking maybe available.

If traveling from London meet outside the entrance to London St Pancras station (Midland Road Entrance) from 9.00am to give time to get tickets and groupsaves (see photo below). The 9.31am (platform B, St Pancras) gets to Hitchin for 10.07am (are other London station stops on this line) please check before travel. Discounts available with a groupsave or network railcard.

Walk length 12miles/19km or 7miles/11km approx circular.

A beautiful & varied walk including the town of Henley-on-Thames, the water mill & weir at Mill End & the villages & hamlets of Hambleden, Medmenham & Aston.

The town of Henley is renowned for the Henley Royal Regatta, a rowing event since 1851.

The walk includes some great sections of the Thames as well as more inland wooded areas with good views on the first section of the path to the hamlet of Aston before the lock and weir at Mill End (closed in 1995 & mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086) till finally reaching the spectacular village of Hambledon (valley used for a great deal of film and TV locations).

The walk back includes much of the Thames path past the village of Medmenham & passing the Temple Island summerhouse & fishing lodge built for Fawley Court in 1771 along the path back to Henley.

There is the option of doing a shorter of version of this hike which is a figure of eight from short to long.

12miles/19km (Henley train station to Hambleden) circular. With the longer hike we will take lunch at Hambleden village which has a village shop and pub.

7miles/11km approx (Henley to the water Mill at Mill End circular. If you do the small hike you will need to do a small section of approx 3miles from the water mill at Mill End to Henley which will have to be self guided, however this is flat and very easy to follow along the Thames path. You will also need to take lunch close to the lock (no facilities) or wait till you get back to Henley.

Lunch and Meeting

Please bring a packed lunch and water for the walk. The walk should finish before 4.30pm & include a 30 min snack lunch stop (Hambledon Village), however the time may be earlier than this depending on the weather and pace. We will all meet for optional drinks in Henley at the end of the walk.

MEETING AT HENLEY - Meet for the walk to start at 10.30am after the train from London arrives.

If you want to park your car at Henley various car parks exist, the train station car park is £3.90. For a complete list of the car parks at Henley see http://en.parkopedia.co.uk/parking/henley_on_thames/. Some side streets are free on Sunday (Please check for any restrictions when parking).

TRAIN FROM LONDON

By train from London: The London Paddington train (Elizabeth line) at 9.18am gets to Henley for 10.27am with a short change at Twyford (times correct at time of publishing/please check before travel). I would encourage you to seek out other members who can go as part of a group save on the train and meet from 8.45am to give you time to get tickets.

Train ticket should be about £16 return by using a group save or national railcard discount.

I would suggest you meet outside the WHSmith shop at Paddington to give you time to get a group save and buy tickets as you may have to queue (see photo below). See National Rail Enquiries (http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/))
