Esperanto Day

Esperanto Day is a worldwide observance, which celebrates the publication of the first book in the Esperanto language. Esperanto Day is a day of linguistic justice and therefore of just and fair relations among ethnic groups, cultures, and peoples.

Program:
10:00 AM – Opening Ceremony
Venues: Esperanto House (143 Lawson Street, Redfern) and Revolve Art Gallery (138 Little Eveleigh St, Redfern) – connected internally

11:00 AM – Presentation: “Esperanto Day”
Exploring the significance of International Esperanto Day, the history of the language, and its role in promoting international friendship, cultural understanding, and peace

12:00 PM – Art competition announcement
Revolve Art Gallery
Official announcement of the Esperanto-themed art competition and exhibition

1:00 PM – Lunch
Meet new people, practise Esperanto, and share cultural experiences in a friendly environment.

2:00 PM – International Zoom meeting
Join a live online meeting with Esperanto speakers from around the world. Exchange greetings, discuss Esperanto activities in other countries, and celebrate the international Esperanto community.

3:00 PM – Presentation: "The First Book (La Unua Libro)"
“La Unua Libro” was the first Esperanto textbook published by Dr L. L. Zamenhof on 26 July 1887. The session will examine its historical significance, the origins of Esperanto, and its lasting influence on the international language movement.

4:00 PM – Poetry reading and a short play

• Poetry: Live readings of classic works, including Zamenhof's historic 1887 masterpiece, Ho, mia kor’.
• Theatre: A live production of David Ives’ hilarious short comedy, Words, Words, Words — three monkeys, three typewriters, and the infinite search for Shakespeare. Directed by A.Thomas and starring a talented cast of local actors.

5:00 PM – Refreshments and social gathering
Enjoy light refreshments while continuing informal conversations, making new friends, and practising Esperanto in a welcoming and relaxed setting.
