Over the 20 years that Agile has been adopted, the attitude to architecture has been swinging from being outdated and ridiculed to being something you can talk about with respect. It was considered outdated, a relic of old-fashioned bad methods with an architect culture of big upfront design. It was replaced by working software achieved by what in simplified form could be described as “Just code, refactor later”. Today, some popular methods advocate a balanced approach to architecture, modeling and refactoring with an agile spin on it. Others are still reluctant to any form of upfront design.

This MeetUp attempts to illuminate the situation, and the speakers will share their own personal experience.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Grady Booch:
Grady Booch is Chief Scientist for Software Engineering at IBM
Research where he leads IBM’s research and development for
embodied cognition. Having originated the term and the practice of
object-oriented design, he is best known for his work in advancing the
fields of software engineering and software architecture. A co-author
of the Unified Modeling Language (UML), a founding member of the
Agile Alliance, and a founding member of the Hillside Group, Grady
has published six books and several hundred technical articles,
including an ongoing column for IEEE Software. For over a decade,
Grady was a trustee for the Computer History Museum. He is an IBM
Fellow, an ACM Fellow, an IEEE Fellow, has been awarded the
Lovelace Medal and has given the Turing Lecture for the BCS, and
was recently named an IEEE Computer Pioneer. He is currently
developing a major trans-media documentary for public broadcast on
the intersection of computing and the human experience.

Murat Erder:
Murat Erder has over 25 years’ experience working for software providers, consultancies, and global banks. His roles have ranged from developer to architect, and consultant to CTO. He is co-author of Continuous Architecture (2015) and the upcoming Continuous Architecture in Practice (2021) books which focus on architecture in the world of agile, DevOps and cloud. He is currently the CTO for HR, Legal and Comms at Deutsche Bank.

Stefan Malich:
Empowers people and organizations to reduce the complexity and risk inherent in the development of software-intensive systems by improving the way they design, evaluate and implement software architectures. This encompasses the enhancement of architecture-related methods and processes (e.g. agile architecting), the adoption of technologies (e.g. cloud computing) and application of innovative architectural patterns and designs (e.g. IoT, AI). During his career, Stefan has gained more than 20 years of experience in strategic IT advisory, IT projects, enterprise and software architecture management.
