Building a Freer Future: Crypto & the Cypherpunks

Hello friends - I hope you're having an awesome summer so far.

Here in the US we find ourselves in the midst of yet another polarizing election. For all the various partisan divisions and hot-button issues, there's one fear that's shared by many Americans across the political spectrum: "if the wrong party wins, my most fundamental freedoms will be at risk."

These fears are not unfounded - and they're also mirrored by what's been happening across the planet. As quantified by the non-profit Freedom House, the percentage of humans living under authoritarian governments has been steadily increasing during this century. Meanwhile, the digitalization of our lives has created new opportunities for regimes of all stripes to engage in the sort of top-down surveillance and control that would make even George Orwell blush.

Faced with these global trends and heightened political tension domestically, you might be excused for feeling like we're falling deeper into the dystopian abyss.

But here's the good news: the fight for freedom is not one-sided; there's already a powerful ethos and burgeoning set of tools that can counteract the tide of centralized control. And it all started with the Cypherpunks.

This event will give you deeper insight into the Cypherpunk movement: its roots, underlying philosophy, goals, and challenges. Your expert guide will be Josh David, organizer of Denver's Liberty on the Rocks. Josh is a firm believer that the tools arising from the Cypherpunk and crypto-anarchy movements can preserve and protect our freedom.

Bitcoin and Ethereum can directly trace their roots to this ethos. What else can we build to create a better future for humanity? What might the future hold? What can we learn from the advent of this technological and societal movement? After this talk you'll be better-equipped to answer these crucial questions.
