Friday AM ethics: Money in politics

We say we draw topics from "situations in life and from the news of the week" so we will be discussing money in politics, which is relevant given the primary in CA for Governor and also relevant considering people in office currently are using their office to make more money for themselves and their families. As for elections, can we trust a politician who self-funds an expensive election? What makes a candidate trustworthy? When do they lose credibility? Does the way there came to acquire wealth matter?
Most of the founding fathers were super rich and held slaves. Does that matter now?

We will not be discussing specific candidates, but rather the principles and ethics exposed when money and politics mingle (or collide).
