Evening Ethics: Alternatives to military service

Emerging from our discussion of Armistice Day, came the question of an alternative to military service. Should there be an alternative? What should it be? Who would be eligible? Would everyone be required to serve in the military or serve an alternative?

If you are a veteran of military service, your input would add a lot to this discussion. If you were a conscientious objector to war, your input would add a lot to this discussion. If you came of age after the draft was abolished, how did you decide to enlist or not?
