Humour and Humility: Laughing at Ourselves (and Others)

Details

Why do we laugh at awkward silences, internet memes, or the pratfalls of politicians? Humour touches nearly every corner of our lives: it eases tensions in boardrooms, sparks protest on picket lines, and connects strangers over shared absurdities. Yet it also has a sharp edge - jokes can divide as easily as they unite, reinforce power as readily as they subvert it. In a world where irony often doubles as armour and comedy carries serious consequences, exploring the nature of humour means asking deeper questions about freedom, justice, identity, and the way we live together.

This event invites you to reflect on humour not just as entertainment, but as a window into the human condition. Let's explore the playful and paradoxical ways laughter operates - how it bridges gaps between people while also exposing their differences, how it can mask pain yet also release it, and how it offers both liberation and restraint. Through conversation and reflection, let's ponder humour’s role in shaping relationships, communities, and cultures, without assuming it always serves the same purpose or carries the same meaning.

How does laughter reflect our struggles with power, fairness, and vulnerability? In what ways does humour act as a tool of resistance, and when does it reinforce the very inequalities it seems to mock? How do jokes both reveal and conceal our deepest emotions, offering comfort while also unsettling us? What does it mean that we can laugh at the ridiculousness of life while still searching for meaning within it? And in a time when humour travels faster than ever through digital spaces, what responsibilities do we have in the ways we create, share, and respond to it?

Alright folks! I want to give a little disclaimer - I’m not claiming to be an expert on the topics we’ll be discussing. My aim is to create a judgment-free zone where attendees can share thoughts and experiences openly.

Let’s approach our conversations with open minds and a sense of curiosity, knowing that we each bring unique backgrounds and perspectives. Please feel encouraged to express yourself in ways that reflect who you are, and let’s all keep in mind that our words carry meaning for those around us. The intention of the meetup is to learn from one another, so if anyone feels uncomfortable or misunderstood at any point, please don’t hesitate to speak up. This way, we can address things together and make sure everyone feels valued and included.

The goal is to explore ideas collaboratively, without promoting any particular viewpoint. We may not find simple answers to the questions we face, but by approaching them with empathy, respect, and inclusivity, we can gain new insights and work towards positive change.
