Intentional Communication Class: how to pace

Intentional Communication Class
This week’s tool: pacing and leading.

What is pacing and leading?
A lot of people begin a communication by pushing the other person or trying to solicit information before properly orienting that person’s mind to the subject matter.

Example: You walk up to a coworker and say, “Did you get that email?”
This communication could be better.
-It’s vague—what email?
-It lacks a stated intention—why are you asking?

Here is what the conversation sounds like when the speaker paces properly and uses a simple structure: [statement of fact] + [disclose your intention] + [pass the conversation to them].
You: “Hey…so-and-so sent us an email 10 minutes ago saying the fundraising event is canceled. I was curious if your reaction was the same as mine.”
Coworker: “I’m disappointed, but it frees up our time to work on the new grant application.”
You: “I was thinking the same thing.”

In this week’s workshop, we will rotate conversation partners and practice this technique using various prompts that I will provide.
My hope is to sufficiently introduce this technique so that you can start using it in your daily interactions.

This week’s workshop is free of charge as I continue to assess market need for these workshops. Some attendees ask if they can make donations to my coaching business, which is always appreciated, but there is zero expectation. The most important thing is that you improve your communication and confidence as a result of attending.

If you have questions, you are welcome to message me. However, the Meetup app/platform can be glitchy at times, so if you don't receive a reply from me within 24 hours, please text or call my business cell: 408-365-4340. See you soon!
