The film follows an American man whose final wish is to have his ashes scattered at a French château he once visited. His disabled widow and two sons are stunned by this peculiar request, but reluctantly travel overseas to honor it. Once there, the eldest son is haunted by visions of his late father. As he uncovers a long-buried family secret, he’s drawn into a chilling and unexpected conclusion.
The Reckoning—inspired by Guy de Maupassant’s Pierre et Jean (1888)—is directed by acclaimed actor, writer, and filmmaker Alex Breaux. The film stars Michael Weaver and Kristin Griffith (well-known for starring in Interiors by Woody Allen)
For Breaux, The Reckoning is deeply personal, shaped by his and collaborator Weaver’s experiences caring for aging relatives and exploring how duty can consume a life. At its heart is Brian, the son who stayed behind to care for his mother, becoming trapped by sacrifice.
