Expats Portugal brings together people of many nationalities who are living in, moving to, or simply curious about life in Portugal.
Our community is all about connection — meeting new people, sharing experiences, discovering new places, and building friendships across cultures. We organise in‑person weekend meetups around Portugal, as well as online talks, workshops and social events, making it easy to connect no matter where you are.
This group is for:
- Expats living anywhere in the country and keen to travel
- People newly arrived or well-established in Portugal
- Those planning a move and wanting real connections
- Anyone who enjoys good conversation, shared experiences and new places

Aveiro: Central Region Meet Up Weekend

Often called the “Venice of Portugal”, Aveiro is one of the country’s most charming and distinctive destinations. Built around a network of picturesque canals that weave through the city centre, Aveiro combines maritime history, colourful architecture, delicious local cuisine and a vibrant cultural scene.
Famous for its elegant Moliceiro boats, Art Nouveau buildings, vast salt pans and the irresistible sweet treat known as Ovos Moles, Aveiro offers a unique blend of tradition and modern life. Just beyond the city lie beautiful beaches, nature reserves and the iconic pottery heritage of nearby Vista Alegre.
Join fellow Expats Portugal members for a weekend of exploring, learning, great food and wonderful company as we discover some of the very best experiences this fascinating region has to offer.### Saturday: Exploring the Traditions of Aveiro
Our Saturday programme showcases some of the region’s most treasured traditions, flavours and cultural heritage.
Viva a Ria City Canals Cruise
We begin with a relaxing cruise through Aveiro’s famous canals aboard a traditional Moliceiro boat. As we glide through the waterways that gave Aveiro its nickname, you’ll enjoy an onboard tasting of two local specialities:- Traditional Ovos Moles
- Sparkling wine from the renowned Bairrada region
This is the perfect introduction to the city’s rich maritime history and unique character.
Ovos Moles Workshop & Tasting
No visit to Aveiro would be complete without discovering the story behind Portugal’s most famous sweet delicacy.
During our visit to an authentic Ovos Moles workshop, we will:- Learn about the fascinating history of Ovos Moles
- Observe how these traditional sweets are made
- Take part in the filling process ourselves
- Enjoy a tasting of the finished product
- Aveiro Salt Experience
Aveiro Salt Experience
The Aveiro Lagoon has been producing salt for centuries and remains one of the region’s most important traditions.
During our guided visit to the salt pans, we’ll learn:- The history of salt production in Aveiro
- How the lagoon’s unique environment supports the industry
- Traditional and modern salt-harvesting methods
- The importance of Aveiro salt to local culture and cuisine
Each participant will also receive some specially selected Aveiro salt to take home.
### Saturday Evening: Cocktails, Cajun Cuisine and Great Company
After our day of exploration, we’ll gather for social drinks and dinner at the newly opened Segunda Linha Restaurant, owned by fellow Expats Portugal member Lori McConnell. Cocktails have been kindly sponsored by this events partners: RHJ Group, KipperTree and off course Expats Portugal.
Inspired by the golden age of cocktail culture, Segunda Linha specialises in carefully crafted pre-Prohibition cocktails from the 1920s and 1930s, alongside authentic Cajun and Creole cuisine inspired by the vibrant flavours of New Orleans.
This promises to be a memorable evening of great food, excellent drinks and the warm conversation that makes every Expats Portugal meetup so special.### Sunday: The Art and Heritage of Vista Alegre
On Sunday morning we’ll visit one of Portugal’s most prestigious and celebrated cultural institutions: the Vista Alegre Museum.
Founded in 1824, Vista Alegre is internationally recognised for its fine porcelain and ceramic craftsmanship, combining centuries of artistic tradition with contemporary design.
Our guided visit includes:- A tour of the Vista Alegre Museum
- Insights into the history of Portugal’s most famous porcelain manufacturer
- An introduction to the artistry and craftsmanship behind the collection
- A hands-on pottery workshop where participants can experience the creative process for themselves
This unique experience offers an opportunity to connect with an important part of Portugal’s artistic and industrial heritage.
