The Jersey City Loop (Port Liberté to Exchange Place)

Details
The day begins by taking the 9:40 AM New York Waterway ferry (telephone 800-533-3779) from Manhattan to Port Liberté (fare $8.00). This is the last morning ferry and takes about 15 minutes, arriving via the Claremont Terminal Channel.
Port Liberté is a peaceful, European-style gated community on the Jersey City waterfront. Originally designed by a team of European architects, the village was inspired by the canals of Venice and Port Grimaud on the Côte d’Azur. The result is a quiet neighborhood with a distinctive Mediterranean character, just behind the Statue of Liberty on the banks of New York Harbor.
Once we arrive, we’ll explore the waterfront on foot, following the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway. This path should lead us toward Liberty State Park, with scenic views along the way. If the route is open and conditions are good, we’ll continue the walk all the way to Jersey City. If not, we’ll take the Light Rail from Port Liberté or a nearby stop to Liberty State Park.
There is also a nearby cemetery that appears to be over 100 years old and may be worth a short detour, depending on timing and group interest.
The plan is flexible, with an emphasis on enjoying the setting, the company, and the unique character of this part of the waterfront. We finish at the Exchange Place PATH train stop.
