Flower Photography - Free Online Event by PSA Gold Rush Chapter

Details
With an upcoming Gold Rush workshop on Flower Portraits (both indoors and outdoors) on April 26th, we thought we would offer an online program on Flower Photography before the workshop to get us in the mood—and give us even more information! Please join us on March 29th at 10:00 AM with the excellent presenter Arik Gorban.

In order to receive the registration link, you must be registered.
Heads-up:
This may be the last free online program, as we have to replenish the Gold Rush coffers. We would just require a Gold Rush membership at $15/year—which is free the first year you join PSA (Photographic Society of America). It is easy to sign up at an in person workshop or at PSA online. What a deal! Email Laurie Friedman ([laurief@dcn.org](mailto:laurief@dcn.org)) for any questions you may have.

PROGRAM:
Flowers are beautiful and are almost always available, making them popular subjects for photographers and painters. This program focuses on creative flower photography that goes beyond capturing accurate flower pictures. We’ll see how to take advantage of interesting and beautiful shapes, textures, and colors to create original art. The program covers creative seeing and image making, from the initial setup and capture to post processing, including subject selection, gear, lighting, composition, handling of the background, and post-processing. The presentation shares ideas and techniques for creating unique and personally-expressive flower photographs. Most of the techniques are simple to use and do not require expensive gear.
Topics:
Creative seeing and image making, from capture to post processing
Subject selection and image design (perspective, composition, focus)
Equipment
Evaluating and modifying the ambient light (diffusers, reflectors, light blocking)
Using on-camera and off-camera flash with light modifiers (reflector, umbrella)
Discuss creative techniques:
- Shallow DOF – work with curves and shapes
- Wide Angle Lens – create impact with perspective (one flower close)
- Out-of-Focus Foreground (natural or artificial objects)
- Vaseline on Filter
- Blending sharp and blurry images (Photoshop layers and masks)
- Two shots, one out of focus
- Two shots, one fast and one slow speed (need a breeze)
- Two layers in Photoshop, one blurred
- Cloning, stretching, modifying opacity of petals
