STREET PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP ON SATURDAY, 10/25!

Gold Rush is a chapter of PSA (the Photographic Society of America) and offers very affordable quarterly in-person workshops and online photo programs. Our upcoming workshop is on Street Photography on Saturday, 10/25 from 9:30-4 at our usual location at Oakmont Retirement Lodge (5301 F St., Sacramento). We have two amazing, experienced presenters, David Kalb and John Hernandez, and will be visiting Old Town for the afternoon shoot, dividing the group up so you have a chance to work with both photographers. The workshop is designed to give you both the concepts and the practical experience needed to grow as a street photographer, all in one session! You can sign up now at https://tinyurl.com/streetphoto2.
The approximate schedule is as follows:
9:30 Registration
10:00 Business meeting and showing of images from the previous (Flower Portraits) workshop.
10:30-12:30 Programs on Street Photography
12:30-1:30 No-host lunch at Panda Express (5801 Folsom Blvd)—or bring your own.
1:30-4:00 Shoot at Sacramento Old Town; Closest parking is the Tower Bridge Garage off Capitol Mall for $6/hour; Meet in front of the Delta King.

DAVID KALB—BIO, PROGRAM, & SHOOT
David was born and raised in Los Angeles, and developed his interest in photography at an early age watching his uncle print images in a home darkroom—to an 8-year old, it was like magic! David is the current President of the Viewpoint Photographic Art Center in Sacramento. According to Kalb, “Street photography is like eavesdropping on the world”, capturing a unique moment in time.

David will present a series of photos including street images from around the world, discussing the following: Seven Key Tips for capturing great street photos; the perception that street photography is limited to actual “streets”; missed opportunities; and where to look for that “decisive moment”.

In Old Town he’ll concentrate on the following concepts: preparing for the unexpected—camera readiness; photographing people, from candid to portraiture; and gaining confidence photographing strangers.

JOHN HERNANDEZ—BIO, PROGRAM, & SHOOT
John is a Sacramento-based photographer specializing in commercial work, portraits, and weddings. He earned his degree in photojournalism from SF State University in 2009, and has pursued his passion for capturing authentic images of people—whether in the studio or candidly on the street—ever since.

John will share how he approaches street photography (mindset, observation, and timing), and how to increase your “keeper rate” by anticipating moments and refining your technique. He’ll also show the Behind-the-Scenes (BTS) breakdown of how certain shots were made, and contact sheets showing the full sequence leading to “the shot”.

On the guided afternoon street photography session, he’ll demonstrate techniques in real time, then guide participants as they practice on their own, with the opportunity to experiment, ask questions, and get feedback while shooting in the field.
