March Photo Study / Couch Potato Shots!

From: Jan L.

Good afternoon,

Congrats to Michael this month! A wonderful basketball shot with a great expression.

You're probably wondering what a couch potato shot is... it's actually an exercise in finding a classic composition or a scene that is unique on your TV! Fun, whimsical, and you may find yourself watching TV for new reasons. Watch for unusual lighting situations, or choose a character and see if you can capture a portrait. It's fun, and you might discover that it is more challenging than it looks! You'll want to use fairly fast shutter speed of at least 1/125 sec. with either a high ISO or a tripod, since you'll be shooting indoors. Give it a whirl and see what happens!

1. You may post up to three photos only. The reason behind posting three photos is to give yourself the opportunity to study the subject from three different angles, perspectives, technique, etc.

2. Your photos must convey the theme of the current subject, and they must be taken during the month of that photo study. This is because we want to challenge you to get out there and practice!

3. And please, if you post pictures, add a comment or two about someone's work that you like! Sometimes we don't see things that someone else may see, and that's one of the ways we learn how to take better pictures.

4. The Photo Study will start on the first day of every month, and end at 9:00 p.m. on the last day of every month.

I've posted an example of a shot I took during the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Quote of the month:

If you are out there shooting, things will happen for you. If you’re not out there, you’ll only hear about it.” – Jay Maisel

Have a great March!

Cheers,

Jan
