Mark your calendars for Saturday May 11th, 2013! This is a day of remembrance with a Massive Memorial Ride for Ron Bishop (http://hiwheel.posterous.com/oakland-bike-mayor-ron-bishop-the-real-face-o), L.C.I., the original co-founder of BAER, this amazing bicycle group that keeps Ron's rides rolling.
With a proclamation and possible send off from Oakland Mayor, Jean Quan, other city officials may also be participating. It is even possible that Berkeley Councilor, Kris Worthington, will help get this ride from north Oakland to his City Hall!
As a broad brush, this ride will follow the visualization I have drawn up in "How America Can Bike and Grow Rich, the NBG Manifesto (http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/B00ALHC38Y/ref=sib_dp_kd#reader-link)" of the 2015 Eagle HiWheel (http://hiwheel.posterous.com/chapter-excerpt-why-i-ride-an-eagle) ride to Washington, DC I will be doing with a group of fellow Greenway minded riders. Similar to the Oakland chapter draft Ron had had the chance to look at before he died, we will met at the ** Ferry Building at Jack London Square at 10AM**, do a lap around Lake Merritt, and head to Berkeley City Hall, via North Oakland, near the Grand Lake Theatre.
There is no limit on the number of riders who join this event! Bring all your bicycle friends and ride in the spirit of Ron. Enjoy the Ride!

May 11, 2013
WHEREAS, in 1884 Thomas Stevens rode a HiWheel bicycle from our city to Boston, making his the first ever bike ride across America; and
WHEREAS Oakland has 90-miles of on-street bike lanes and hosted the first US city-sanctioned Car Free Day as well as the first big city Bike-to-Work day; and
WHEREAS, Ron Bishop, recognized as Mr. Bike Oakland by City Council, played an important part in building a consciousness for bicycling in Oakland; and
WHEREAS, the city of Oakland recognizes Ron Bishop's work with the National Bicycle Greenway (NBG) to build our city into its network of bike friendly roads and bicycle pathways that will form a bike route connection from San Jose/San Francisco/Oakland to Washington, DC; and
WHEREAS, Ron collaborated with NBG Director, Martin Krieg, who was born in Oakland and used its beautiful mountain roads to rebuild his body for his first bike ride across America, and the quiet of its neighborhoods to write the book about his recovery from head injury and the two bike rides across America that followed.

About the 2013 National Bicycle Greenway CA Mayors' Ride:
After HiWheel legend, Steve Stevens (http://hiwheel.posterous.com/steve-stevens-a-penny-farthing-legend-13006), kicks our 2013 CA Mayors' Ride off a thousand mies away in Golden, CO, on Earth Day (4/22), San Jose's sister city, Dublin, Ireland, eight time zones away, joins in the National Bicycle Greenway fun on April 27 to make ours an International Mayors' Ride.
On the last Saturday in April then, our 2013 CA Mayors' Ride (http://bikeroute.com/NationalMayorsRide2013) will kick off from Dublin, Ireland, before it leaves San Jose, the largest city in the SF Bay Area and America's 10th largest on the following Saturday, May 4. The Dublin tour will be led by 77 y.o. International HiWheel trick riding champion, Peter Matthews (http://nbgireland.blogspot.ie/2012/12/peter-matthews-cyclist-with-few-equals.html), along with Martin Krieg (http://www.bikeroute.com/MartinKrieg.php) on his 1891 Eagle HiWheel (http://hiwheel.posterous.com/chapter-excerpt-why-i-ride-an-eagle). A coast-to-coast cycling veteran, like Krieg, Pete crossed the USA with Gary Sanderson, both on HiWheel bikes, just a few years ago when they were both 70 years old!
