Gender in the Tarot de Marseille: FWM Monthly Pub Moot!
Details
Monthly "Pub Moot" and Lecture Series- in English
This Month’s Topic:
The esoteric coding of gender in the Tarot de Marseille
Magician and Strength, Priestess and Pope – why is the Tarot so gendered? We talk a lot today about ungendering the Tarot, but in order to have a nuanced discussion about gender roles in the cards, we first have to understand what the symbolic role of gender was in the first place.
Using the 22 Major Arcana of the Nicolas Conver Tarot de Marseille (1760)—the deck that standardized the Marseille tradition—I explore the symbolism of gender within the Tarot. The cards were not designed arbitrarily; each gendered figure serves a specific esoteric function, revealing a profound interplay of duality and opposition at the heart of the deck.
You might ask why Le Bateleur appears as a man, while La Force is female. What do these choices tell us about spiritual polarity, about creation and reception, action and contemplation? Through Major Arcana, let’s explore the hidden architecture of the Tarot de Marseille and the decoding of the symbolism of gender.
By unravelling these webs of meaning, we shed light on a history of mystical symbolism while questioning reductive or heteronormative notions of what “feminine” and “masculine” energies mean. As people, we are much more than our gender roles—and so are the cards. I invite you to discover how the genders of the Tarot, far from being restrictive, open a path toward deeper spiritual and psychological insight.
