Fen & Friends: Cambridge Social Walks & More (20s & 30s)

Fancy getting outdoors, exploring Cambridge and the countryside around it, and meeting some new people along the way? Fen & Friends is a brand-new, relaxed social group for people in their 20s and 30s who’d like to make friends in Cambridge. I’m not sure how much interest there’ll be yet, but I thought I’d give it a go, so if it sounds like your kind of thing, come along!

A bit about me
I’m Sam, 33, and I live in Cambridge. Like a lot of people, I’ve realised my social circle has got a bit small over the years, and I’d love to meet new people and make some proper friends. I know that turning up somewhere new on your own can feel daunting, because I feel it too! So if you’re in the same boat, you’re definitely not alone, and this is a group where that’s completely okay.

What we do
Our regular meet-up is an easy walk of around 5–8km, usually lasting 1.5 to 2 hours, through meadows, along the river and out into the surrounding countryside. Think Grantchester Meadows, Wandlebury, the river towpath and the occasional trip out to Wicken Fen. Afterwards we head to a café or pub for a coffee, lunch or a pint for anyone who wants to stay.

Shaped by the group
This group is about whatever we all want to do together. Walks are our regular thing, but if people fancy a kickabout in the park, a pub quiz, a picnic, a board game night or something else entirely, just suggest it and I’ll do my best to organise it. The more ideas, the better!

Who it’s for
Anyone in their 20s or 30s (roughly) looking to meet new people, whether you’ve just moved to Cambridge, your friends have moved away, or you simply fancy widening your circle. Lots of people come on their own, so don’t worry if you don’t know anyone. That’s the whole point!

A friendly, judgement-free group
This is a relaxed, kind and welcoming space. If you’re a bit shy, find meeting new people nerve-wracking, or are working on your confidence, you’re especially welcome. Plenty of us feel the same way! There’s no pressure to be outgoing. Just come as you are, go at your own pace, and chat as much or as little as you like.

What to expect

A friendly, relaxed pace. This isn’t serious hiking, and no fitness level is needed.
Plenty of time to chat and get to know each other.
Regular meet-ups, so you’ll see familiar faces and get to know people properly.

What to bring
Comfortable shoes, clothes for the weather, water, and a bit of cash or a card for the café or pub afterwards.

Fancy something bigger?
If there’s interest, I’d love to plan some longer day walks and the occasional camping trip, so if that sounds like your thing, let me know! I’m always open to ideas for new routes and adventures.

New members are always very welcome. Come along, say hi, and let’s explore Cambridge together!
