About us

Calling all crafters! If you love working with precious fiber and fabrics and cherishing the bonds formed with fellow crafters, Fiber Friends Studios' Meetup is the perfect place! Join us for an inspiring gathering where you can forge new friendships, enhance your skills, and share your creative ideas. Each Meetup is hosted at a local cafe, where you'll enjoy good food while supporting our community's restaurants and coffee shops. Come stitch, chat, and create lasting memories with us!

Members support local charity projects, including Knitted Knocker, which knits and crochets breast prostheses for women who have undergone mastectomies. During Chicago winters, they "Warm-up Hyde Park" by knitting hats, scarves, and gloves to leave throughout the neighborhood for anyone in need to take. We actively participate in Knit for Foods' annual fund-raising event.

Saturday morning crafting at Manny's, the cafeteria-style deli on Jefferson that's been running since 1942.

How it works if you've never been: you go through the line with a tray, tell the carver what you want, and find a table. Get there, get your food, then find us — we'll have a table with more yarn on it than anyone else's.

Bring whatever you're working on, and come hungry. The portions are not modest.

This one's further north than our usual — Near West Side rather than South Side — so give yourself travel time. There's a free lot behind the restaurant, and the #12 Roosevelt Road bus drops you around the corner. Manny's opens at 8, so early arrivals have somewhere to sit.

Free to attend, no sign-up. Breakfast is on you.

Curious about Doodle Decks but unsure where to begin? Confused about color selection or layout options?

In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to use Doodle Decks to design your own unique stranded colorwork pieces for any project. We'll guide you through interpreting Doodle patterns, exploring color combinations, and planning your next creative venture. Bring your own Doodle Decks for inspiration, or browse through our in-store selection. You'll have access to graph paper and colored pencils to sketch out your ideas and experiment with palettes during the session.

Please note: This is not a colorwork technique class but a preparation and design-planning session.

Level: All skill levels
Prerequisites: Ages 12+.
Meet the Instructor
Sophia Wetzel (she/they) has been an avid knitter since 2020. Like many, she took up knitting during the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic. What she expected to be a passing interest became an enduring and cherished part of her life. After moving to Chicago in 2024, Sophia became an active member of the local knitting community, attending her beloved Fiber Friends meetups and visiting the many wonderful shops around the city.

Sophia has a love for colorwork knitting, despite its less-than stellar reputation. She loves the process of finding the right colors to make a pattern shine and watching as the designs and images come to life on her needles.

When Sophia isn't knitting, she is a PhD student in Music History and Theory at the University of Chicago, where she researches and writes about video game music. In September of 2026, Sophia presented at the Music, Craft, and the Fibre Arts conference in Ontario, combining her academic work with her work as a fiber artist.

Join us at Fiber Friends Studios on Wednesdays from 1–3 p.m. for a relaxed afternoon of making and conversation. Bring your knitting, crochet, embroidery, or another portable project, and settle in with hot tea and a sweet treat. All skill levels are welcome, whether you’re working on your first project or finishing something that’s been in your bag for months. Come on your own or bring a friend; there’s room at the table.

We've got a group going on the Hygge Shawl — the three-color Malabrigo Caprino design by Jill Tamminen of Knit Sisu that thousands of knitters cast on September 18. Some of us are ahead, some of us are behind, and one of us has ripped back twice. Come sit with us.

Not doing the KAL? Still come. These are our regular open meetups and they always have been — knitters, crocheters, embroiderers, menders, anyone with a project and two hours. No skill level, no sign-up, no obligation to buy anything.

What to bring: whatever you're working on. Or nothing, if you'd rather see what this is before committing to it. That's allowed.

If you're stuck: bring the problem. Color changes, gauge, blocking questions, a dropped stitch you've been avoiding for a week. Symone will be in the room to help solve it

Need dedicated help? We offer one-on-one sessions for $30 an hour, bookable Wednesday through Sunday. Perfectly reasonable to spend one on a shawl.
