This fall, the Filmmakers & Movie Nerds Autumn Challenge begins. If you want to write a short film screenplay for the challenge, our next focus group is the perfect place to start.

We’ll be working with one of the most powerful tools in storytelling: the dramatic predicament.

A dramatic predicament is more than conflict — it’s the no-way-out situation that locks the protagonist to the central struggle of the story. It gives your character urgency and drive, structures the narrative from within, and helps you decide what belongs in your story and what doesn’t. In other words, it’s both compass and fuel for your screenplay.

How the session will run:

1. Exploration – We’ll discuss the concept of the dramatic predicament through concrete film examples.
2. Application – Together we’ll write the outline for a short film screenplay built around a dramatic predicament, testing how this tool sharpens character and story.
