What we’re about

Do you write short stories or flash fiction, enjoy meeting new people and work/study near central? If so, please consider coming to an event.

When the weather is good (not raining), the idea is to meet in Trafalgar Square (outside the National Gallery) at 6:45pm with a printout of your writing.

Your story should be between 300 and 700 words, and readings should not exceed 5 minutes.

Unless at least 5 people RSVP, 12 hours before an event, it may be cancelled.

FLASH FICTION

I like to think of “flash” as being somewhere in-between short stories and poetry. The challenge lies in crafting a story that contains style, meaning, atmosphere and structure within just a few hundred words.

The best thing about stories that are about 500 words is that they do not take very long to read. This means that, when sharing it with one of your friends, it doesn’t feel like as much of an imposition as asking them to read the 4th draft of your novel or even a 4000-word short story. If they do not like the material, you have only wasted 5 minutes of their life.

This is why I created the group. I believe that it may be an effective way for writers to showcase their style whilst potentially making a few friends. It also gives you the opportunity to do a little bit of “public speaking”.

I would advise members to only read pieces that they are comfortable with sharing publically. If you’ve been working on something for months and are planning to enter it into a few competitions, you may not want to share that, which is completely understandable.

Whether you’ve been writing fiction for years or you just started a few months ago, you are welcome. The group aspires towards three values; fun, intelligence and experimentation. This means the joy of meeting other talented creatives which often leads to learning how to think about problems from a number of different perspectives, the challenge of writing concise stories that are both entertaining and thought-provoking and just playing with ideas.
