Join us for a fun filled night where we’ll talk about how fungi will save the planet! You’ll hear from our panel of experts and enthusiasts about the advancement in science and technology that has allowed us to use fungi is different ways. This event is meant to educate, engage, and inspire people to make an impact on their environment and learn more about how versatile fungi can be. Light snacks and refreshments will be served.
Panelists: Gladiators in the field of of myco-innovation, from Food Science, to MycoRemediation, to Myco-Technology, to Urban Farming.
Kimberlie Le, CEO and Co-Founder of Prime Roots, leads a company that makes fungi superprotein that is delicious and good for you and the planet. Prime Root's superprotein is grown using fermentation and their process and ingredients are all natural. Prime Roots is developing delicious, hearty, and nutritious meat and seafood alternatives with the protein and has a community chefs and foodies for plant based recipe sharing, fungi related content, and experience seeking fungi-lovers.
Kim developed the idea to use fungi as a sustainable protein source and meat analogue through her experience in microbiology and in having deep roots in the restaurant and food service industry. The Prime Roots team was part of IndieBio, the world's leading biology accelerator, and made the world's first fungi based salmon burger that was featured in Fast Company as a World Changing Idea and the Wall Street Journal in the Future of Everything.
Maya Elson, Executive Director of CoRenewal, is a teacher, naturalist, mycologist, organizer and lover of the wild. She is dedicated to enacting effective and just solutions to environmental and social crises. As one of the founding members of the Radical Mycology network, she’s worked on various fungal cultivation and educational projects in Olympia, WA and the San Francisco Bay area. She’s worked as a campaign organizer with a number of climate justice and wilderness defense struggles over many years. Maya is the founder and a guide for Wild Child Santa Cruz, a nature immersion program for homeschoolers. As an instructor of Mycopermaculture, Fungal Biology, Mycorenewal and Mushroom Identification for both adults and children, she has experience writing curriculum and giving mycology-related workshops. She is currently studying Ecopsychology, leading mushroom hunts and doing rites of passage for young women with Gaia Girls.
Siv Watkins, CEO and CSO of 11Biomics, is an environmental microbiologist specializing in examining the activities of microorganisms found in soils, freshwater and wastewater. Since 2003 she has worked in industry, for commercial applications and academic research and faculty positions. 11Biomics is an early-stage, community-focused biotech company founded to provide completely natural biological-based pesticides for plants. She provides the scientific knowledge for the operation, and her goal is to use her training to support the sustainable and thoughtful growth of medical plants and to support the people who use them.
Back to the Roots will have an informational booth and will be selling grow kits.
Mario Gabiati, Board Member of Counter Culture and Entrepreneur, has degrees in cognitive science and neurobiology from Occidental College, marine biodiversity and conservation from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and conservation policy from UC San Diego. His brilliant workshops weave together his background in biology, education, horticulture and food science. He's an active member and educator for Bay Area Applied Mycology Society and is a fungi enthusiast.
