Reviving Native Beauty with Fire: Upcoming Controlled Burn at Mead Garden
Exciting things are happening at Mead Garden! The Tarflower Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society is preparing for a carefully planned controlled burn to restore and rejuvenate a section of our beloved native plant habitat.
Thanks to the recent rainfall and the welcome drop in the drought index, burn bans are being lifted, and conditions are aligning for a safe and effective prescribed fire. Pending prescription criteria, we are preparing to conduct a 0.3-acre burn in the Sandhill section of Mead Garden’s native plant area very soon.
Why a controlled burn? - Fire is a natural part of Florida’s native ecosystem. Prescribed burns:
- Reduce excess vegetation and invasive species
- Stimulate the growth of native wildflowers and grasses
- Improve habitat for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife
- Restore ecological balance and biodiversity
This is a powerful and positive step in our mission to protect and promote native flora!
How You Can Help: Volunteer This Sunday!
Join us as we prepare the site for a successful burn. Volunteers will be gathering this Sunday to help cut back shrubs and clear excess plant debris—essential steps that support fire safety and fuel management.
🌿 What to bring: gloves, loppers/pruners, a reusable water bottle and your love for Florida’s wild landscapes.
🌞 Time & details: Sunday, May 18 at Mead Garden starting at 8 AM
This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved, learn about fire ecology and make a visible difference in our native plant sanctuary.
Let’s work together to keep Mead Garden thriving!
