This section of the river is wade-able mostly up-stream and a little downstream from the access point. At the deepest we could see waist to chest deep water.

We may see people come by on canoes, but shouldn't be crowded with a lot of float traffic this early. This is a public access, so no gate code to worry about.

Thanks to non-native trout introduction and a myriad of other factors, in recent years, the Rio Grande Cutthroat has suffered much at the hands of man. However, there are many organizations and conservationists today who are dedicated to reversing past wrongdoings. Chris Johnson is one such
individual. In his presentation, he will discuss the Rio Grande Cutthroat’s history, distribution, and current status, as well as conservation efforts benefiting the species throughout its range. Chris is an avid Rio Grande Cutthroat angler, and he will share some tips and tricks to that will help you maximize your success on your next cutthroat expedition!

I'm happy to share what I know about fly fishing. This sport has taken me to beautiful places in Austin and around Texas. I will share what you need to know to get started.

Together, we will cover the following:

1. Fishing License and Outdoor Annual app
2. Fly rod construction and line setup.
3. A lesson in casting. Everyone will be comfortable casting to the point they can "cast to fish."

*Plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

I'm keeping the limit at 6 for this event so I can be helpful to everyone who attends. If you don't get to sign up, don't worry, I will set up other events in the future.
This class will be split into two sessions. I will cover why fly fishing is effective, touching on aquatic macroinvertebrates, gear, where to fish, casting instruction, and practice. If there is time and people have a license, you can actually do some fishing. If you do want to try fishing, I can't promise you'll catch anything. Sometimes that is just fishing.

Because this is an outdoor activity, sunscreen, bug spray, sunglasses, and water are essential. Anything you think you may need to be outside for a few hours. There probably won't be a bathroom, so go ahead and use the bathroom beforehand.
