Fly Fishing Texas

The mornings are finally feeling cooler and the afternoons less brutal! Tejas Park sits along the North Fork of the San Gabriel River upstream from Lake Georgetown. It is a prime location for fishing with friends.

Fish
This water is beginner-friendly and offers plenty of space for casting. I visited two weeks ago and saw many aggressive bass and bedding sunfish.

Requirements
Anyone who plans to fish must have a valid Texas Parks and Wildlife Fishing License. Day passes can be purchased online for $11.

Gear
I am fishing with a 4-wt floating line, and have spare 5-wt and flies for anyone who wants to fly fish without having to purchase all the gear. I accept a small fee to help replace the flies and leaders.

Sun protection clothing and water are recommended. Polarized sunglasses are HIGHLY recommended because they making fish easier to see and protect your eyes from harmful sun glares reflecting on the water. Lightweight pants, good shoes, and a wading staff are suggested to be prepared for any terrain.

All people are welcome! Beginners and easoned anglers are encouraged to join and share knowledge that supports other's enjoyment of the sport in local Texas waters. I am happy to carpool.

There is about a 1.5-mile hike through the forest's flat and muddy trails. We will reach a pedestrian bridge and access the river easily. This is challenging fishing that requires patience, roll casts, and steeple casts. The water is a tan-brown color with sandy bottoms, unlike anything we experience in local central Texas waters, and fall fishing keeps the snakes, reptiles, and mosquitoes at bay.

This is difficult fishing through rugged wilderness, and it's easy to get lost. I have been here once and can guarantee its difficulty. Tight spaces and vegetation screaming to be snagged may require that one angler fish a pool while the other(s) observe and learn. This is an expedition, as I would like to go further than where I stopped the last time, and learn how to fish in this new environment.

Cooler temperatures may require waders. There are affordable options at local and online stores, such as Living Waters Flyfishing and Big Y Fly.

I will have my camp stove for a hot meal after the hike back. Bring a chair, speaker, drinks, and any other foods for a roadside, middle-of-the-forest picnic with friends. Hmmm, stew?
