Join us for our monthly gathering, hosted by Scribd (https://www.scribd.com/)! We will feature one short and two longer talks, sandwiched with networking and food and drink.

We are dedicated to a harassment-free experience for everyone. All attendees are expected to abide by the Fog City Ruby Code of Conduct (http://fogcityruby.github.io/).

We'll ask you to write your pronoun on your name tag. Want to learn more about why we do this? Read this guide from Bryn Mawr (http://www.brynmawr.edu/pensby/documents/AskingforNameandPronouns.pdf).

Submit a talk for a future meetup: Fog City Ruby CFP (http://www.fogcityruby.com/cfp/)

Need inspiration? Check out our topic wishlist (https://github.com/fogcityruby/organizing/wiki/Topic-Wish-List)!

Speakers of all programming and speaking experience levels are welcome to submit talks, and we're especially excited to host speakers who come from populations that are underrepresented in tech.

SCHEDULE

6:30pm — Doors open, food, networking

7:00pm — Sara Tansey: Become a Better Code Reviewer

Great code reviews don't happen by accident. They take practice and careful thought about the purpose and mechanics of code review on your team. It's easy to accidentally glaze over while reading a long review, or make comments that are technically correct, but questionably beneficial. Come hear tricks that will help your code review dig below surface details. Good review habits will improve your communication with your teammates, so you can finally make real progress on that code debt.

7:15pm — Brandon Weaver: Triple Equals Black Magic

For the most part, === is either ignored or used in the background of case statements. What if I told you it's one of the most powerful operators in all of Ruby? We're going to take a look at what all === can be used for, so join us and find out!

7:45pm — Kevin Kuchta: The Best JavaScript Is Ruby

Some people love Ruby and some love JavaScript. Let's do our best to make both of them unhappy! We'll abuse Ruby syntax to make valid JS that's also valid Ruby, and learn a bit about Ruby metaprogramming along the way.

8:15-8:45pm — More hanging out and talking to nice people

SPEAKERS

Sara Tansey has coded in a wide variety of environments from giant Google billing systems, to 100% pair-programmed iOS apps at Pivotal Labs. She is fascinated by code, but not as much as by the social processes that we use to build code. When she's not a software engineer, she is a teacher.

Brandon Weaver: Ruby and Javascript at Square. Typically responds in puns.

Kevin Kuchta's a generalist engineer at the mental health startup Joyable. Because he has the attention span of a startled sparrow he works on everything from HTML/CSS to JS to Ruby to infrastructure work. His greatest accomplishment is memorizing the lyrics to Tom Lehrer's "Elements" song.
