Tech Talks: Containerized Ruby, Concurrent Ruby, and more!
Details
Join us for our monthly gathering, hosted by Carbon Five (https://www.carbonfive.com/)! We will feature one short and two longer talks, sandwiched with networking and food and drink. Bike parking is available at the venue—please bring your bikes with you up to Carbon Five's suite.
We are dedicated to a harassment-free experience for everyone. All attendees are expected to abide by the Fog City Ruby Code of Conduct (http://fogcityruby.github.io/).
We'll ask you to write your pronoun on your name tag. Want to learn more about why we do this? Read this guide from Bryn Mawr (http://www.brynmawr.edu/pensby/documents/AskingforNameandPronouns.pdf)
Submit a talk for a future meetup: Fog City Ruby CFP (http://www.fogcityruby.com/cfp/)
Speakers of all programming and speaking experience levels are welcome to submit talks, and we're especially excited to host speakers who come from populations that are underrepresented in tech.
SCHEDULE
6:30pm — Doors open, food, networking
7:00pm — TBA
7:15pm — Julian Fahrer: Containerized Ruby
You have most likely heard about Docker: a piece of technology that can help you with developing, shipping and running your applications. Ruby and Docker make a great team, but getting to a point where you utilize Docker in every stage in your application's lifecycle can be tricky. We are going to address many of the common obstacles and how to overcome them. You will learn useful tips and tricks that you can apply to containerize your applications. This talk is for everybody who is interested in utilizing Docker and containers to optimize their development workflow and deployments.
7:45pm — Gonzalo Maldonado: Concurrent Ruby Patterns. How to Speed Up Your Code Using Async Methods, Futures, and Promises
You don't need to switch to Go to use Channels, or to JavaScript to use Promises. Concurrent Ruby is a library that brings these features to Ruby. This talk will go over a couple practical examples of things you can do with this library.
8:15-8:45pm — More hanging out and talking to nice people
SPEAKERS
Julian Fahrer is a software engineer, online educator, and container enthusiast. He automates all the things and writes Ruby by day. At night, he sleeps. In between those times, he is busy climbing, hiking, and getting outdoors. His current life goal is to drastically reduce the time he sits.
Gonzalo Maldonado has been hacking every Turing-complete device he has stumbled upon since the days when computers had green screens. From Apple IIs and Raspberry Pis to iOS devices and distributed Ruby systems (yes, Ruby can be concurrent), Gonzalo has managed to tame any system to create fun and useful software that makes people happy. He now is a senior Rails engineer at Lumosity.
