About us
Hi there!
We are a social group in Gloucestershire and neighbouring areas for enthusiasts of folk-rock (very loose definition - mainly modern including a lot of non-English-language European elements), medieval-electronica and similar music genres - including the kind of music from Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and other things - basically a mixture. Please note this is not a pagan group as such, however some of the bands and events we go to may include some pagan etc. elements, but our music-appreciation group in itself is just that: about appreciation of a range of music genres and bands that describe themselves as “folk rock”, "folktronica", “medieval-electronica”, "neo-medieval", “pagan rock” and similar… Playlists of example tracks are on Spotify if you search the playlists there for "FRGP" - if you don't use Spotify there are some YouTube links below...
There'll also sometimes be events further afield including in other countries like Germany, Sweden, ... Some of these will be just small events aimed at people living there, while some others may be intended as proper trips away for festivals etc.
This is a friendly, fun, respectful and non-political group about types of music and some associated historical styles (e.g. medieval-style clothing) - and is against any form of extremism or hate-speech.
We’re mainly in the general wide area in and around Cheltenham and Bristol and might expand, generally with a pub evening in each of these once a month in a side-room / function room where we can have our own music and chat about the bands and music, and possible future gigs & events we could go to. We'll also soon start some open-sessions in pubs with the musicians among us learning up and playing some of these tracks if enough musicians among us take part - if you're a musician and interested in playing at future sessions then please get in touch :)

Renaissance night! Tavern-style pub party
The Swan, 35-37 High Street, Cheltenham, GBOn Friday 4 September, join us for a fantasy-themed tavern/ren-fair-style evening at The Swan in Cheltenham, in the function room at the back of the pub. Think loosely kind of like medieval-ish, pirates, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Vikings, fantasy, etc. Costumes encouraged (even just a decoration or hat) but not essential - the staff at The Swan will award prizes for the best costumes! Main thing is everyone just has a great evening! FREE ENTRY. I'll be DJ Hamstyr, playing various tracks of medieval-electronica, pagan rock, modern folk-rock, power-folk, etc.
The Swan will be doing themed drinks and mead .... !8pm till late | Friday, 04 September

Medieaval Baebes - concert in Tewkesbury Abbey

Join us at stunning Tewkesbury Abbey to hear the fantastic Medieaval Baebes in concert.
Tues 14th December 2026 - 6.30pm
Meet at 6.30pm by the main door - go through the metal double-gates on the pavement opposite the Bell pub and along the short path up to the Abbey. We'll wait outside with everyone else to see their typically impressive procession shortly before 7pm into the abbey."Each album features traditional medieval songs and poetry set to music, mostly arranged by Blake specifically for the ensemble, alongside varying numbers of original compositions. They sing in a variety of languages, including Latin, Middle English, French, Italian, Russian, Swedish, Scottish English, German, Manx Gaelic, Spanish, Welsh, Bavarian, Provençal, Irish, modern English and Cornish. Their vocals are backed by medieval instruments, including the recorder and cittern, played by the singers or fellow musicians.
The Bæbes' musical pieces run the gamut from extremely traditional, such as their version of the "Coventry Carol" on Salva Nos, to songs that feel traditional but are much more modern...

The doors to the venue will open at 7pm. A few minutes before this you will be treated to a grand torchlit procession and entrance by the band.
