The Business of Food Logistics

Food logistics is really, really hard. Scores of startups have launched to tackle food delivery, but many, like Good Eggs and Farmigo, have learned the hard way that it takes more than good software to get food from the field to your plate.

This month we're doing a deep dive into distribution logistics. Join us to get in inside look into how Blue Apron, Homer, OurHarvest and The Fresh Connection approach logistics. You'll also get insight into their challenges and lessons learned.

We'll also have networking with the community and nibbles from The Meatball Shop, Fields Good Chicken, The Spicy Cookie Company, Eat In ChefOatbox and Barneys Bone Broth.

6:30 - 7:15: Networking + Snacks

7:15 - 8:45: Presentations + Q&A

8:45 - 9:30: More Networking

Luis Toral, FoodKick GM and former Sr Director of Logistics & Project Management at FreshDirect - FoodKick is FreshDirect's mobile-first food business that connects consumers to the freshest, tastiest finds in food, drinks, and lifestyle essentials all delivered within an hour.

Adam Price, CEO, Homer Logistics - Am NYC-based startup that specializes in providing last mile, hyperlocal delivery fulfillment services to merchants in urban areas. Homer works exclusively with the restaurant industry and provides an outsourced logistics solution, replacing the more traditional need for the merchant to manage their own in-house staff of delivery people. Contrary to a transaction platform using independent contractor networks, Homer is solely a backend logistics solution and hires and employs all of its couriers as W2 employees. Homer uses applied operations and operations research to drive efficient logistics into the delivery infrastructure leading to the highest service levels for merchants and consumers. Homer completes 1000s of deliveries each day for brands ranging from Pinkberry to Chick-fil-A to Chop’t.

Mike Winik, Co-founder, OurHarvest - An an online farmers market that brings top-quality, farm-fresh food directly to consumers at fair prices.  By connecting the best local farms and food artisans directly with families, OurHarvest rewards farmers for their hard work and gives customers better, fresher, more affordable food.  Simply, they are fixing the broken food supply chain. Customers receive their groceries either through home delivery in NYC or by picking them up at convenient, mobile pick-up sites in their neighborhoods.

Mark Jaffe, Owner, The Fresh Connection - The Fresh Connection was a trucking company focused on strengthening the local food supply chain by providing delivery and logistics services to the local food system.

Presenter: Ashley Adewuyi, Founder of LiLoE Labs

Ashley Adewuyi, Founder, LiLoE Labs - LiLoE Labs is the maker of Jeffrie, the most convenient way to secure unattended home deliveries, including groceries. Jeffrie aims to take the hassle out of grocery delivery as part of its go-to-market strategy. Jeffrie is currently in closed beta testing with two grocery delivery companies in the Mid-Atlantic.

Really an amazing event last night! Thank you so much Danielle and team! One quick follow-up: if anyone knows of any emerging companies (or in development phase) that provide the equivalent of what Homer offers for food businesses but on the catering side I'd love to hear about those companies.

I really did enjoy the information shared by all the presenters last night. I was seeking out logistics folks from packagers and package suppliers to delivery and last mile purveyors but came up woefully short on that side of things.

I did speak with all the presenters and asked the appropriate questions. We are a small start up and like all things scale is important so most of the information was not appropriate for our stage of development. Other than that I has some wonderful conversations with fellow attendees, but did not specifically come across people specific to my needs. Would love any insight anyone has to share

Great observation, Alex. There are none - it's why The Fresh Connection went under and why Revolution Rickshaws only dabbles in the area. Seems almost everyone on the buy side wants something for next to nothing in the last mile or only mile logistics marketplace in NYC IMHO. Our costs are hard (at least if you want to pay "living" wages), and the slim margins disappear if haggling with potential customers ends in a deal that leads to a slow bleed. Revolution came close recently to building out its infrastructure with one anchor customer paying initially above crazy low "market" rates, and we managed to drop the price 33% after they met agreed goals; however, their sales plateaued too early and we had to terminate the contract. We focus now on profit-making accounts - and those accounts don't include last or only mile logistics for food makers and marketers at this time.

First time at the FT meetup and thought it was well organized, the presenters did a good job, and the food & drinks were nice. Only suggestion to make networking easy so you know what someone does/specializes in is to have a brief description of what you do e.g. App Devel/Software, Graphic Design/ Creative, Sales/Marketing, Logistics/Transportation, Food/Bev Producer, Food/Bev Buyer, Financing/Investor, Media/Press etc... To make it even easier once you have your defined "buckets" is to have color coded name tags to easily pick out the people you are interested in from a distance.
