Details

The first meeting of Philosophy & Beer: Thinkers and Drinkers. We’ll meet at one of the tables at Verboten North Brewpub. We can also do an outside table once everyone is gathered if the weather is nice. I’ll try to get a flag or something so you know what table to go to. Verboten has really good beer and food as well. They also have bottomless mimosas and bloodymarys all day Sunday if that’s to your liking.

For the first meeting we’ll do some basic introductions and then explore the question What is Philosophy? It’s actually harder to answer than you think. Some question to ponder before the meeting:

  1. What makes philosophy unique, say from science or art?
  2. Why do people like philosophy so much, or hate it?
  3. What is the proper subject matter of philosophy?
  4. Are there right answers in philosophy?
  5. Is there progress in philosophy, and what would it look like?
  6. Does studying philosophy make you a better person?
  7. Is it right to say philosophy needs logic, in the same way science needs math?
  8. What are the most interesting philosophical questions?
  9. Who are the greatest philosophers (that you know of)?
  10. What makes someone a philosopher or philosophically minded?
