About us

Pertinent information here, followed by more interesting contextual information below. Come to a few practices and see how you feel!

We meet at 1pm Tuesday afternoons in Bijou Park unless it's raining. We'll be using the grass lawn between the volleyball courts and skate park. If you go through the main entrance on Al Tahoe Blvd and follow the road into the park, you'll quickly see the skate park and parking spaces next to the lawn.

At what date we'll end for the season is a little up in the air! With the temperatures dropping, we'll be practicing midday for as long as possible, until snow is consistently covering the ground. Stay up to date here on Meetup.

This is a group formatted to help build strong foundational aspects of qigong. This recurring time together is best used to supplement your daily individual practice. Having both a social and personal side to your practice really encourages growth and consistency!

Qigong and Taichi in the park is one idealistic part of Chinatown life in my eyes, and is one of the few ways we can include others in our practice, but this community park format usually does focus more on purely the movements rather than the intention behind those actions.

Building the foundations of your qigong practice to me means practicing, experiencing, and learning the broader system that informed the development of these movements. Qigong could go in the same direction as asana-heavy yoga in the west, except most qigong sets are (luckily) not as compatible with our fitness economy!

Qigong is a somewhat recent umbrella term most popularly used to refer to sets of simple movements that impart health benefits on those who practice regularly, and nowadays is mostly marketed toward those who may not be able to participate in more strenuous traditional exercise.

We will be practicing one core set of meditative qigong movements, but the focus will rather be on building a familiarity with those same movements, and learning about the intention embedded in them. The attentional aspect of the movements you're performing are overlooked in most classes, but the majority of the benefit lies in the part of practice where your body and mind are both participating fully, rather than just the body.

As we focus our time on one set, we won't be concerned with "collecting" new movements, but the foundations of practice are transferable to any new qigong practices you find. Personal exploration is great, and an important part of your own growth.

Our sessions in the park will be more akin to students practicing together, and far less like a teacher instructing students. Finding your true teacher is rare, but establishing a space to gather with other students and work toward a common goal is totally possible.
