PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: New Age and Law of Attraction gurus have been on the rise since Rhonda Byrne released her 2006 film, "The Secret." Her film popularized the "Law of Attraction" greatly and has allowed this fallacious philosophy/belief to permeate the mainstream for a very long time. The history that lies behind "The Secret" has its roots back to the 1800s, when the New Thought Movement, as well as other New Age beliefs, began.
In this program, we'll dive into that history and the sinister industry that has been built up around it. We'll take a look at some of the most influential figures in New Thought from the past to the present day. Figures like Napoleon Hill (author of "Think and Grow Rich" and "The Law of Success"), Esther/Abraham Hicks* (author of "The Law of Attraction" and various other works), Bob Proctor, Rhonda Byrne, and others. We will also explore the connections between New Age gurus and multi-level Marketing companies, a connection which seems very prevalent among many of the big figures in this industry.
*Hicks is just one example of a charlatan who deceives by claiming to receive messages and insights from the biblical character, Abraham, through a process called "channeling". In Hicks' case, channeling is the act that involves entering a supposed meditative, trans-like state and allowing Abraham to speak through her. Hence, she goes by either name, i.e., Esther/Abraham Hicks.
