About us
The Freethinkers Forum of Tallahassee Meetup offers a friendly and educational venue for all to learn and discuss thought-provoking presentations. Those who believe that opinions, religious and otherwise, should be formed based on logic and reason will feel right at home. If you are unfamiliar with freethought or just curious, join in and you'll have an opportunity to learn what freethinkers, humanists, agnostics, atheists, skeptics, and critical thinkers are all about.
Our focus is to provide an environment in which to learn about and discuss a wide variety of subjects including science, social science, medicine, philosophy, religion, history, literature, and current events, to name a few. Meetings begin with a presentation that is not necessarily limited to a secular topic, followed by lively and informative conversation. We meet every Wednesday via Zoom from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. (prior to COVID, we met at UUCT). We start at 7:00 sharp.

The Mandelbrot Set: The Origin and Applications of Fractal Geometry
·OnlineOnlineLINK TO ZOOM MEETING:
https://us06web.zoom.us/j/88384219320?pwd=dlR1WHpBM1JJT2ZXdmE5dSthRWp1UT09PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Our program explores the discovery and derivation of fractals. Actually, fractals are not “derived” from one single formula — they emerge from a family of mathematical constructions where a simple rule is repeated infinitely. In particular, we will look at a specific fractal iteration known as the Mandelbrot Set.
The Mandelbrot Set is employed in modeling real-world phenomena. With the advent of computers, the Mandelbrot Set can be used to describe the mathematics of roughness — revealing that complexity is built from simple rules repeated over and over.
Mandelbrot’s work touched off a revolution in the study of turbulence and disorder across science, industry, and art. The Mandelbrot Set is well-known, even outside mathematics, for how it exhibits complex fractal structures when visualized and magnified over many iterations, and is commonly cited as an example of mathematical beauty.
We will look at:
- How the Mandelbrot Set is derived
- How fractal dimension works
- How fractals appear in real-world systems
- How to generate fractals
- Some beautiful patterns fractals, such as the the Mandelbrot Set can produce.

Space Oddities, with Harry Cliff
·OnlineOnlineLINK TO ZOOM MEETING:
https://us06web.zoom.us/j/88384219320?pwd=dlR1WHpBM1JJT2ZXdmE5dSthRWp1UT09PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: from the depths beneath the Antarctic ice to enigmatic forces subtly tugging at the fundamental building blocks of matter, the universe offers us an ever-growing compendium of cosmic riddles. Notably, stars are hurtling away from us at velocities that challenge the boundaries of explanation, leaving scientists astounded by the inexplicable.
Harry will guide us on a journey that spans continents, introducing us to the brilliant minds who have dedicated their careers and reputations to unraveling the mysteries shrouding these cosmic anomalies. Are these cosmic quirks flukes of nature, or do they allude to the hidden parts of the universe we have yet to discover? Through Harry’s trademark wit and wonder, he opens the door to the tantalizing possibility of untold cosmic realms waiting to be discovered.
MEET THE SPEAKER: Harry Cliff is a particle physicist at the University of Cambridge working on the LHCb experiment, a huge particle detector buried 100 metres underground at CERN near Geneva. He is a member of an international team of around 1400 physicists, engineers and computer scientists who are using LHCb to study the basic building blocks of our universe, in search of answers to some of the biggest questions in modern physics. His first popular science book, How To Make An Apple Pie From Scratch, was published in August 2021. From 2012 to 2018 he held a joint post between Cambridge and the Science Museum in London, where he curated two major exhibitions: Collider (2013) and The Sun (2018). He has given a large number of public talks, including at TED and the Royal Institution, and made numerous appearances on television, radio and podcasts.
