PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

In the Trump era, and within the public health narrative shaped by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a debunked but persistent myth has taken hold: that infant vaccinations cause autism. Despite overwhelming scientific evidence disproving this claim, the narrative remains central to anti-vaccine rhetoric.

Cultural anthropologist Richard Grinker joins Chris Hayes of MS NOW (formerly MSNBC) to examine how autism has evolved into a political obsession. Together, they will discuss recent cultural inflection points and analyze the research regarding under- and over-diagnosis.

Roy Richard Grinker is a Professor of Anthropology, International Affairs, and Human Sciences at The George Washington University (GWU). He also serves as the Director of GWU's Institute for Ethnographic Research and is the editor-in-chief of the journal Anthropological Quarterly. His expertise covers psychological and medical anthropology, with a specific focus on autism and mental illness stigma.
