PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: In tonight's program, neurosurgeon and neuroscientist Dr Rahul Jandial explains
the sleeping brain and explores the astonishing power of dreams to improve our waking lives.

What does your sleeping brain reveal about your waking life? Do we sleep in order to dream? Dreams are a source of mystery. They have changed the course of individual lives and the world, spurring business deals, inspiring art and scientific breakthroughs, triggering military invasions and mental breakdowns. Yet the source of dreams is not mysterious. They are the product of an extraordinary transformation that occurs in the brain each night when we sleep. Dr. Jandial will delve into the science of the dreaming brain and show the extraordinary impact of dreams on our waking lives.

MEET THE SPEAKER: Rahul Jandial, M.D., Ph.D., is a dual-trained neurosurgeon and neurobiologist at City of Hope in Los Angeles, where he performs complex brain surgeries and leads a research lab focused on treating brain cancer. Beyond the operating room, he is the founder of the International Neurosurgical Children’s Association (INCA), a non-profit through which he performs volunteer surgeries and trains surgical teams in underserved communities worldwide.

His fascination with dreams emerged directly from his clinical practice, noticing that his patients often reported vivid, structured dreams during their recovery from brain trauma and surgery. This led him to investigate the "nocturnal brain," applying the same scientific rigor used in surgery to understand dreaming as a sophisticated neurological process. Dr. Jandial now explores how these internal narratives serve as a window into our cognitive health and emotional resilience, bridging the gap between high-stakes neurosurgery and the science of the sleeping mind.
