PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Two months after the 2016 presidential election, Lewis Raven Wallace, an award-winning independent radio journalist, proclaimed: "Objectivity is Dead and I'm Okay With It" in a blog post, highlighting how "neutrality" in newsrooms can be a tool of racism and transphobia. Wallace, then the only transgender journalist at the public radio show Marketplace, was fired after refusing to take this post down from his personal blog.
In this 2020 talk, sponsored by the Women's and Gender Studies Program and part of the College of Arts and Sciences Justice Theme Semester at the University of South Carolina, Wallace explores the harm caused by the myth of objectivity in journalism and encourages closer consideration of themes such as justice and neutrality in the Trump era.
