- Wildlife and Botanical Photography at the Crow's Nest Research Center (CNRC)400 Marlborough Point Rd, Stafford, VA
The Crow's Nest Research Center (CNRC) has graciously permitted our group access to their facility for a MeetUp Photography Event. The CNRC is a non-profit organization dedicated to conservation, wetlands research, and environmental education. Located on the eastern shores of Stafford County lies 132 acres of managed woodlands and meadows having several trails, a pond and several viewing stations. Their site map illustrates trails throughout the Center. The general area is known for its offerings of scenic walks, nature and wildlife photography.
Our Event will be along the trails in recommended groups of 2 or more people, for safety purposes, but taking pictures along the trails.
The CNRC is open all day year around with prior permission. There are no fees for vehicle parking.
You may bring any lens, but a long focal length or a telephoto zoom lens would be very useful. A circular polarizing filter will help enhance color richness. We will exercise our photography skills such as high speed photography of wildlife and capturing more intimate scenes potentially using focus shift shooting, aka focus stacking, of plants and insects.
It will most likely be very warm, so please drinking water and dress accordingly. Consider bringing bug repellent, mosquito netting hat, sun screen, etc. No steep hiking is required, but I would recommend that you wear shoes or boots with good traction.
If it looks like steady rain or if highway conditions are poor, because of the weather, this Meetup may be rescheduled. An alternate date is tentatively 31 July.

- Air Circus show in Bealeton Aug 17th, backup date is Sunday Aug 18thThe Flying Circus Aerodrome, Bealeton, VA
Note: (the backup date in case of rain is: Aug 18th at the same time)
The Bealeton Virginia Air Circus and hot air balloon show is on Aug. 17-18. There’s lots of color and challenging shooting conditions with fast moving aircraft (great practice for action photography or video). They also allow the public on the field to photograph the balloons prior to launching them, which provides a great opportunity to get close-up photos of colorful balloons. For more information see:
http://www.flyingcircusairshow.com/
Adults are $20. Children are $10. Military active duty and retired are $15.
The air show starts at 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. The evening balloon flight is usually from 6 to 8 p.m., but you are allowed on the field with the balloons an hour or so before the balloons launch. You can stay for the air show, just attend the balloon launch, or stay from 12:30 PM to 8:00 PM for both events. There is a snack bar if you want to get a sandwich and drink between the two events. There are also clean, modern restrooms on the grounds.
We will meet near the far end of the fence, to the right of the announcer's tower at 12:30 PM. I will probably arrive at 11:30 to avoid a long line.
If you RSVP with the intention of attending this event, please be sure to change your RSVP, if you later decide you will not be able to attend. All event hosts are volunteers and often spend a lot of time researching and setting up the event. Please be courteous and change your RSVP as soon as you know that you will not attend the event.
