Hike Paulina Creek along the Peter Skene Ogden Trail (car shuttle)
Details
(Please read ALL information carefully.) Join us for a very special hike along the Peter Skene Ogden Trail near Newberry Caldera! This 7-mile trail goes gradually downhill through the forest from Paulina Lake to McKay Crossing Campground, often beside Paulina Creek with its stunning waterfalls. Due to very limited parking we will create a car shuttle between McKay Crossing Campground and Paulina Lake Day Use Area. This is a delightful hike but best suited for those who are able to hike at a steady pace, while enjoying stops at waterfalls along the way. Because it is a popular trail so it is important we have well-behaved dogs who can also hike for 7 miles. Dogs must be on leashes for the first part of the trail and in the campground. Dogs also will need to tolerate other pups sharing their car on the car shuttle.
Bring a sack lunch to enjoy beside the creek and other essentials such as water, snack, hat, sun screen, hiking sticks if you use them, etc. Our parking locations require each car to have a Northwest Forest Pass, Interagency Annual Pass, or Interagency Annual Lifetime Senior Pass. Be sure to come with the pass in hand! You may or may not be asked for it as you enter Newberry National Volcanic Monument (sometimes the booth is not staffed) but you will have to display it on your car's dashboard when parked. If you have questions, see the Monument's website.
Because we will be arranging a car shuttle, it is critical that the people who sign up for this hike actually SHOW UP+ ANSWER THE 2 QUESTIONS BELOW! We will meet at Martina's cottage and then drive approximately 23 miles south on Hwy. 97 and then 14 miles up road 21 (Paulina-East Lake Road) to Paulina Lake, stopping by McKay Crossing Campground to organize our car shuttle (a few miles on a gravel road). Have a full tank of gas! Lake always, PLEASE CHECK THIS MEETUP SITE THE DAY BEFORE. EXCESSIVE SMOKE OR HEAT MIGHT CHANGE OUR PLANS and let us know at least 48 hours in advance if something comes up and you can't attend.
