National Trails Day - Sandos Park Cleanup
Details
Get ready to roll up your sleeves for wildlife and Denver's trails!
This National Trails Day, join Friends of Animals’ Wildlife Law Program, Polar Planet, Canada Geese Protection Colorado, GreenLatinos, and Denver Parks & Recreation for a citywide effort to clean up Denver’s trails and urban wildlife habitat.
We’ll be focusing on Weir Gulch and the surrounding Sandos Park trail system, just west of Barnum Park, where trails, water, and wildlife all come together.
If you enjoy seeing hawks overhead, ducks along the water, or butterflies and songbirds, or simply enjoy making the environment healthier for everyone, this cleanup is for you.
Supplies Provided:
Gloves • Trash pickers • Buckets • Waders • Bags • Dumpsters
What to Bring:
- Your own gloves (garden gloves encouraged to reduce single-use waste)
- Reusable water jug with plenty of water
- Sunscreen and hat / weather-appropriate clothing
- Sturdy, closed-toe footwear (waders not required)
- Optional: extra waders will be available for those who want to work in the water
Please note: Children must be supervised. Pets are not permitted.
Weir Gulch is an urban wildlife and drainage corridor in the South Platte River system, supporting ducks, herons, turtles, fish, pollinators, and many other species moving through the city. It also runs alongside the trails and open spaces at Sandos Park, where people walk, bike, and gather in the heart of the neighborhood.
Litter and stormwater pollution continue to degrade this shared space, but what happens here depends on what we do next.
By coming together at Sandos Park, we can also demonstrate that restoring wildlife habitat here is a public priority and help shape upcoming restoration planning across Weir Gulch and the South Platte system.
Protecting wildlife is a matter of justice, not just conservation.
Join us to remove waste, reduce harm, and restore safer, living spaces for animals and our communities.
