Title:
The Surprising Benefits of Using Event-Driven Architecture to build Machine Learning Applications

Description:
One of the most common patterns used in building machine learning applications is to build a REST API that will generate and return inferences when client applications send some data to this API in the form of a request, a.k.a, the request/response pattern.

There is nothing inherently wrong with using this approach, but it does have some limitations.

This talk will cover a relatively new, but increasingly popular architecture known as event-driven architecture and will demonstrate how it not only addresses some of the limitations of traditional request-response based applications, but it also offers some benefits specifically for machine learning and data analytics.

The talk will conclude with a demo of a sentiment analysis application that generates inferences on Yelp review data using a customized DistilBERT LLM.

Speaker:
Prema Roman is a Senior Machine Learning Engineer at Rotational Labs and an adjunct faculty member at Georgetown University. She has a proven track record of building high quality software applications and data products across several sectors including financial services, e-commerce, and the government. Her passion for continuous learning has taken her a long way from her start as a data analyst, as she takes on new challenges at Rotational Labs building globally distributed systems and machine learning data products. She holds a Masters degree in Software Engineering and a Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems and Marketing from George Mason University.
