When can young children begin engaging in philosophical discussions? Some argue that children cannot meaningfully philosophize until around the age of nine or ten, when they develop the capacity for abstract reasoning. Maria daVenza Tillmanns, however, offers a different perspective. She argues that children, who possess an intuitive grasp of the world, can begin learning how to philosophize much earlier.
For Tillmanns, intuitive knowledge is fundamental to philosophizing. Abstract thought and logic should build upon a child's intuitive understanding of the world rather than replace it. Intuitive knowledge concerns our direct relationship with the world and with others. Learning to articulate the complexities of perception and our relationship to the world is something artists already practice. In this sense, Tillmanns suggests that teaching philosophy to children is similar to teaching them art.
