Can qualia be measured?

For centuries, the "what it's like" quality of experience — the redness of red, the specific ache of nostalgia — has been treated as private and beyond the reach of science. This week we're looking at a live research program trying to change that: neuroscientist Naotsugu Tsuchiya's Qualia Structure Paradigm.

Through experiments, the Qualia Structure Paradigm looks to move beyond verbal reports and qualitative introspection, and seek to quantify intersubjective agreement, the degree to which different individuals agree about their experiences.
