Simone Weil & Animal Suffering (In-Person)
Details
Does the designation of "personhood" to animals provide them with dignity? Could we protect ecological systems by deeming them as "persons" too?
Philosophy writers, Michela Dianetti and Chiara Li Mandri say the designation of personhood to animals and nature is not enough. They take an approach influenced by Simone Weil's ethical value of attention. Instead of focusing on the legal definition of a "person", we are invited to be more attentive to every life form's vulnerability, independent of our use for it. This creates a natural obligation to protect each natural entity from suffering.
