Simple, Real World DevOps
Details
If you're a software developer, you probably need to ship code. "Real artists ship," according to Steve Jobs. Well Full Stack is here to ensure you ship in style. We have two DevOps experts who will draw upon their own experiences to showcase some of the interesting and challenging aspects of shipping code. In addition, we have giveaways! Jason Hand will be signing copies of his new ChatOps (https://victorops.com/knowledge-drop/devops-docs/chatops-managing-operations-group-chat/) book - show up early for a free copy courtesy of O'Reilly (http://www.oreilly.com/). We'll also be raffling off a $1500 Bronze conference pass to Velocity Conf (http://www.oreilly.com/pub/cpc/53161).
For our main talk, Jason Hand (twitter (https://twitter.com/jasonhand), website (http://www.jasonhand.com/)) will discuss the origins of the DevOps movement, the important concepts all organizations, regardless of size, must keep in mind, and how to take the first steps. From a cultural assessment of the organization as a whole to the key concepts that are challenging for many in the enterprise world to accept, we'll discuss the core tenets of DevOps and what is required to begin the organizational journey that is required to stay competitive in todays growing and competitive markets.
For our opening talk, Jonathan Rudenberg (twitter (https://twitter.com/titanous), github (https://github.com/titanous), website (https://titanous.com/)) will address how platforms can simplify production environments with standardized automation. This talk will cover what a Platform as a Service (PaaS) is, how it works, and why you'd want one. As a practical example, we'll discuss the open source Flynn platform and demonstrate some features, including automatic management of databases like PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MongoDB.
Schedule:
5:00 - Social hour + ChatOps book signing
6:00 - Simplifying DevOps with Platforms - Jonathan Rudenberg

DevOps Organizational Journey - Jason Hand
DevOps principles and practices within the enterprise have become easier to measure and too attractive to ignore. As a result, larger organizations and IT teams are beginning to seek out ways of rolling out their own DevOps initiative. However, DevOps isn't as simple as implementing new tools, processes, or even hiring on workers with "DevOps" in their title. Rather, it's a focus on Continuous Improvement that allows for the ideas to develop and prosper. This in turn, leads to significant efficiencies, gains, and innovations throughout IT and the entire company.
Simplifying DevOps with Platforms - Jonathan Rudenberg
There's a lot going on in production, and platforms can simplify things with standardized automation. This talk will cover what a Platform as a Service (PaaS) is, how it works, and why you'd want one. As a practical example, we'll discuss the open source Flynn platform and demonstrate some features, including automatic management of databases like PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MongoDB.
Jonathan Rudenberg is CTO and co-founder of Flynn, an open source platform as a service that hosts apps and databases. Before starting Flynn, Jonathan co-architected Tent, an open decentralized communication and storage protocol.
