About us

There is ample evidence that meditation is associated with better mental health, improved attention, and greater emotional regulation. Research indicates it acts as an effective adjuvant therapy for anxiety, depression, and pain. Meditation is a central practice of Buddhism and many other religions, and is a key part of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, taking forms such as contemplative or repetitive prayer. So why don't more people do it? One reason is because life is busy and it's hard to make time. Another is because it can feel a little lonely to do it on one's own all the time, without a community of fellow practitioners.

If you're interested in starting a regular meditation practice and like the discipline of going somewhere to do it, or if you just want to be around other people who practice regularly, our meditation practice group might be for you. We meet every Thursday night at 6:30pm at Unity Gaithersburg at 111 Central Ave in Gaithersburg.

Although our meditation is rooted in Buddhist practice, loosely following the Vipassana tradition, we do not usually offer Dharma talks or guided meditation. We are not meditation teachers, but simply people who like to meditate regularly, and find it good to meditate with others. If you're new to mediation we will give you a brief orientation on how to meditate (which is basically learning to recognize when thinking is happening as opposed to present moment awareness). We typically meditate in silence for 30 minutes, and then we will have a brief discussion about what our experience was like.

It's a very informal, friendly group. Welcome!
